Is Harry Potter Anti-Semitic?

Q. When I saw the latest Harry potter film I was appalled at the clear use of anti-Semitic stereotype in depictions of goblin bankers, miserly, hooked nose and all.  And this is what we're showing our kids?  Isn’t a tacit acceptance of such damaging stereotypes if we ignore them? Shouldn’t Jews be boycotting Harry Potter?

A.   Whoa there! Calling Harry Potter anti-Semitic is downright sacrilegious. In fact, I can make an equally valid case for his being a closet Jew, (a Kabbalist, even), comparing Hogwarts favorably to a yeshiva, and for Rowling’s heroes to be espousing the highest of Jewish values. True, the movie portrayal of the goblin bankers shows them with hooked noses, pointy ears and shriveled faces (read more background here). Further, goblins are systematically suppressed and excluded from their society in the Potter books, much as Jews have been historically. But does that automatically mean that they are being depicted as Jews? I don’t think so. If every grotesque, undersized, shriveled fictitious being were assumed to be a Jew, that would also mean that Yoda, Jewish would be, and E.T. would stop in at shul before phoning home.

Even a critic of author JK Rowling who agrees that the bankers’ portrayal is anti-Semitic thinks we should lighten up about it, because it is very doubtful that there was any intentional malice on Rowling’s part. Others have pointed out correctly that the Potter books is much more clearly a polemic against fascism. The expressions “pure blood” and “half breed” so often used in describing Muggles and Wizards, comes right out of Nazi textbooks. In contrast to the purely evil Voldemort, Harry has what can best be described as a Yiddishe neshama, a Jewish soul, because, as one defender put it, “he cares about how others are feeling, he is kind, and he defends his beliefs; these are a very few examples of proper Jewish behavior.”  Heck, the Iranians claim the series is evidence of a Jewish conspiracy. That alone signals us that Rowling must be doing something right.

The larger ethical question here is whether, as a Jew, we are obligated to point out the dangers of ethnic stereotyping wherever it appears. To that the answer is an unequivocal yes. So thank you for your question, which enabled me to do just that, while at the same time defending the Seven Books of Harry as sacred writ for this generation.

Even a star of David on the floor of the bank. Crazy.... Why don't they just leave us alone?

A Jew wrote that article? Obviously not a jew who has actually attended a Yeshiva. What a poorly written and thought out argument. Yoda and E.T.? First of all Yoda and E.T. do not look like the Jewish stereotype. Yoda doesn't wear glasses, does not have a big hooked nose, in fact nothing about his look is Jewish. ET has almost no nose, no glasses, etc. More importantly those characters were "good" they represented the best in what a being could/should be, so even if they were depicted as Jews(they aren't) that'd be a good thing. The Goblins represent evil bankers(Jewish Stereotype) that align themselves with whoever is in power. They torture a dragon clearly viewed as evil in the series as Potter frees it. They're clearly aligned with Voldemort by the end which you define as the Nazi element in the book. Clearly not a fictional group you would want your group associated with. Furthermore, they clearly have Jewish features; hooked noses with huge bumps on them, short, beady eyes, many have spectacles, etc. This is a site trying to dbunk the theory but check out the side by side pictures. https://momentmagazine.wordpress.com/2011/07/14/debunking-the-harry-potter-anti-semitism-myth/
In any event I don't know what Rowlings is thinking, I do know somebody made a concerted effort to make the Goblins look like that and they do happen to be the evil bankers in the show. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, but now that I think about it I may delete all of my Potter stuff, in lieu of her pro Muslem comments after what happened in Paris especially to the Jews in the Kosher Super Market.

Happy to see the author was able to find yet another example of stealthy anti-Semitism In movies. Alerted by his vigilance I will keep my eyes open for more examples and have begun reexamining my Charlie Chan, three stooges, and John Wayne films.

I don't feel the story of Harry Potter is anti-Semitic, what I do think is that the director and or set director is. The sets and imagery is clearly depicting the goblins in the light of historical anti-Semitic imagery and symbolism as well as clear Judaic symbols. Please see: http://www.treefrogid.com/potter.htm

Jewish, Yoda is. Hmm?

Ya Harry potter is just sooo antisemitic that it chooses Daniel Radliffe, the only Jewish actor, to be 'The Chosen One'....Coincidence?

I don't think JK Rowling is prejudiced - against nonwhites and Jews, that is. Against blond people, yes. I don't think it is a coincidence that the bleached brunette author has portrayed every single blond character (except for Dumbledore's and Fleur's little sisters, who are such minor characters they don't even count) as unpleasant, malignant, or just plain loony.

I think the similarities to Jews goes beyond just the facial features of the goblins. To see a further study of this please see: http://www.treefrogid.com/potter.htm

This post hardly deserves a rebuttal, but calling someone who celebrates Christmas and Halloween "a closet Jew, (a Kabbalist, even)" is really just bizarre. I think that Harrry's empathy could just as easily be a "Christian Neshama" as Jewish one. This post is just silly.
