A Rabbinic Call For Human Rights

Last week, I was one of several rabbis from a range of religious denominations who met with a senior Israeli diplomat at the Israeli Embassy. We were there to deliver a letter asking Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cancel plans to construct a new settlement in the E1 zone.

Such a new settlement would not only create a major obstacle to a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict, but would exacerbate tensions between Jews and Palestinians and inevitably lead to the violation of the human rights of Arabs living in that area. The letter was signed by more 700 rabbis and cantors representing well over 100,000 American Jews.

Last year, I was one of several rabbis who went on a trip to South Florida to stand in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) who have been trying for years to stop the near-slavery conditions endured by migrant workers in the agriculture industry. Since then, the CIW has made significant progress in getting the food industry to abide by a Fair Food Agreement that holds growers to a policy of zero tolerance for slavery, zero tolerance for sexual harassment, and minimum wage and safety protections for all workers.

We engaged in several protests at local supermarkets to put pressure on grocery chains to comply with the agreement. In one, not so small victory, days after our protest at a new Trader Joe’s, the company signed onto the Fair Food Agreement and also agreed to pay one penny more a pound for tomatoes — for the average worker, that translates into $7,000 a year. Trader Joe’s became the ninth major retailer to sign the agreement.

And just last fall, I joined a rabbinic-led campaign that stood up to anti-Muslim hatred with a true Jewish message. What spurred us into action was the fact that Jewish “activist” Pamela Geller had raised money to place an ad in the New York and Washington subway systems that read: “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man.” It continued, “Support Israel. Defeat Jihad.” Now it is hard for me to be ashamed by an ad that ends with “support Israel,” but I was more than ashamed; I was outraged. Within weeks a counter ad appeared that read: “In the choice between love and hate, choose love. Help stop bigotry against our Muslim neighbors.” The “love” ad made New York magazine’s 2012 list of Fifty Reasons to Love New York. 

The common denominator in all three of these stories was Rabbis for Human Rights-North America (RHR-NA). Founded in 2002 as an affiliate of Rabbis for Human Rights in Israel, the organization has gradually broadened its mandate to include a wider range of issues. By mutual agreement with our colleagues in Israel, this past week the organizations announced that even as we would continue to collaborate on Israel related issues, the North American organization would re-organize itself independently under the name, T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights. Much of my work in the American Jewish community involves helping rabbis be more effective leaders. Whether serving in congregations, Jewish educational institutions or Jewish communal organizations, rabbis represent our link to a precious Judaic heritage. Rabbis need to be not only teachers of the values of that heritage but also guides for how Jews might navigate a morally complex world.

Yet advancing human rights is not just the job of rabbis. It is the responsibility of all people of conscience. Religion, if it is going to be a force for good in the world and not a force for division and extremism, needs to motivate people to protect the rights that are guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ratified by the international community in 1948. That Declaration was largely driven by the horrors that the world witnessed during the dark days of World War II. Going forward, T’ruah intends to mobilize the larger American Jewish community to address human rights issues in the world from the perspective of Jewish values. As a people that was so victimized by the failure of the world to take action during the Holocaust, Jews should be at the forefront of efforts to ensure that such horrors never happen again.

There are currently more than 1,800 rabbis and cantors who are part of T’ruah’s network. But this is only the beginning. In the coming years, we hope that all Jews, whether religious or secular, conservative or liberal, wealthy or poor, become part of a movement to ensure that all human beings be treated as if they were made in the image of God (b’tzelem elohim). Standing up for the human rights of all people, regardless of religion, race, sexual orientation or national origin is one of the central mandates of Judaism. If Judaism cannot offer wisdom and guidance as to how we might make a small contribution to heal a broken world, then it has little to no relevance at all.

Perhaps the rabbi should not limit himself to E1. Perhaps he should also call for the incorporation of parts of the Galil & the Negev into a Palestinian State. Let's not forget those areas of N. Tel Aviv where pre-state Arabs lived.
With regard to his followers in the U.S., the rabbi and those with his philosophy should cease being hypocrites and offer to return their American homes to its real owners, Native Americans.
I am also waiting for imams in the States to form a sister organization and stand up to anti-Jewish rhetoric.
The rabbi continues to ignore the true cause of the failure to establish a 2 state solution. The author ignores the fact that it is Abu Mazon who refuses to come to the negotiating table. It was the P.A. who changed the basis for negootiations from 'no prior conditions' to 'acceptance of P.A. conditions or no negotiations'. At the same time, the P.A. continues to incite its population while teaching hatred in its schools. The author also ignores Abu Mazon statements to his own people that he will never recognize a Jewish State while he continues to honor suicide killers. The PLO charter still has not been amended.

Sid Schwartz is to be roundly applauded for adding his eloquent voice to the collective conscience of the Jewish people. If we don't stand for the core Jewish values and principles that Sid speaks about, then we truly stand for nothing at all. Yes, of course we Jews have been persecuted, defamed, and murdered for centuries, but the reaction to that must not be hatred toward other groups but an embrace of all humankind and an unflagging effort to fight bigotry and calumny wherever it is and to whomever it is directed -- including that which is directed at our own people.

Neither you nor Mr Schwartz don't have a clue what Jewish core values are.

I am an American Muslim, having lived both in the United States and the Middle East.

I often find hateful, inciting, and confrontational attitudes from muslims in the Middle East, particularly towards Jews, Israelis, and even themselves. It's a sad state in the muslim world.

However, being a crossover person of both cultures, I am in a slightly better position to see where and why this hate originated. I tend to emphasize peace and love to my fellow brethren instead. No, not all Jews want the unabashed destruction of their muslim neighbors. No, not all Israelis want to kill the next Palestinian they see. There are many good Israelis and Jewish people, and yes, it is not far fetched to believe that we can all get along and live in peace together.

Some of my message falls on deaf ears, while it causes others to stop and think.

It's simple. Hate begets hate. I see that both the average Jew and the average muslim tends to propagate the belief that "it's them who want to kill us." No wonder we're in such a position.

I read the comments in the Geller post that fellow poster Jack Kemp linked to, and I'm saddened (but not shocked) at the positions everyone there is taking. That is EXACTLY the same mentality I've been struggling with on the other side. Believe it or not, people (i.e., muslims and jews) are not really that different from each other. Good people exist on both sides. Jerks exist on both sides.

I applaud Sir Schwarz for his efforts. I don't have to wish him good luck or tell him to hang in there, because he already understands the challenges he faces.

Rabbi Schwarz speaks like a true man of God. Religion should be a force for good in the world and not a force for division and extremism.

Rabbi Shwarz's ignorance of MIddle East history is amazing coming from someone who is supposed to be a Jewish scholar.
He stands in support of a lie, a nonexistent people called Palestinian who have only existed officially since 1967. And for this he wants to give up whats left of the Jewish homeland.

The rabbi invokes 1948 and the Holocaust as if he owns it in a monopoly. The last spokesman in America for the Jews who survived the Holocaust was Benjamin Meed, z''l. You want to invoke the Holocaust, Schwartz? My late father was a Polish Jewish prisoner of war by the Nazis and my mother survived Auschwitz along with her three sisters. I stand with Pamela Geller. If Sid is serious about human rights around the world his efforts would be better served if Rabbis would address the rampant and endemic hatred towards which exists throughout the Muslim world. Much of the tension and refusal to come to a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the Middle East is made intractable because Muslims are taught from childhood to hate Jews, and that hatred is based on Koranic text. Addressing that problem would take courage from religious leaders. It takes no courage at all in protesting the work of American Jews like Pamela Geller who brings awareness of that important issue.
