I appreciate Rabbi Lawrence Hoffman’s scholarly, sensitive and inspirational comments on the weekly Torah portion when they appear in The Jewish Week.

In his insightful comments on the Passover ritual in the portion of Beha’alotkha (May 24), he mentioned occasions other than those involving religious rituals when one must also get the details just right. To that list of times when one must do the “rite” thing, I would add giving or doing for one’s beloved. For if it is so important then to get it just right for “her” or “him,” how much more important is it when the beloved is God.

We should remember how much of Judaism is about this love affair between God and Israel.
