Fed up with ethical lapses among Jewish leaders that have “reached crisis levels,” more than 350 scholars, authors, rabbis, cantors and Jewish community activists have signed onto a “declaration” that is challenging individuals and organizations to act with more transparency and accountability, and in accord with Jewish values.

Even as Israel endures daily “lone wolf” attacks from young Palestinians prepared to die for the cause of spilling Jewish blood, American Jewish leaders confide that generating support for the Jewish state is becoming increasingly difficult these days — even within the Jewish community, and especially among younger people.

For many of us, 2015 cannot end soon enough.

It has been a year punctuated by Islamic terror attacks, first in January, in Paris, at Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket. It culminated with the Friday night slaughter across Paris in November and, as if to underscore the spread of murderous ideology to our shores, the shooting deaths of 14 innocents at a Dec. 2 office party in San Bernardino, Calif., by a young couple committed to the cause of the Islamic State.

Israel has “an existential problem.” No, it’s not a nuclear Iran, or ISIS at the northern border.

It’s charedim (also known as ultra-Orthodox Jews), too few of whom have adequate secular education and too few of whom have jobs to support their families — a situation that threatens to turn Israel’s economy into a “Third World” one. The problem is especially grave given that charedim are the fastest-growing segment in the Jewish state’s population.

David Brog, the 49-year-old head of the new, Sheldon Adelson-funded, multimillion-dollar effort to combat BDS (the boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel), is well aware of the high — and no doubt unrealistic — expectations among pro-Israel advocates for him to succeed.
