  • Top Ten Reasons To Hate Newsweek's Annual Top Rabbis List   2 years 46 weeks ago

You are incorrect, Reform rabbis can also be intermarried. I should know, my rabbi is intermarried and also gay. How many glbt rabbis were on the list?

I don't think there's anything wrong with publishing a list of influential rabbis - though I would question who they really think they're influencing - but I do think it's right to question the wisdom of having a couple CEOs decide who they think influential rabbis are.

The reality is that the Reform movement is actually the only aspect of American Jewish life which has had a significant impact on larger American culture. Which doesn't mean a few rabbis who are Conservative, Reconstructionist, and even Orthodox or Hasidic may have affected American life. But rabbis are mostly only influential to other Jews, though we often like to believe otherwise.

  • Young Israel Movement In Turmoil Over Upstate Shul   2 years 46 weeks ago

As a delegate, and one who could not get a word in edgewise because Mr.
Levin and others were so rude,I would like to remind him that the email also said:

"A number of Young Israel rabbis asked us to postpone the vote on the
resolution about the Young Israel of Syracuse. They want to attempt to
resolve the matter with the branch so we may avoid a vote on expelling
the branch. We of course agreed to do so. "

NCYI never wanted to close Young Israel of Syracuse or "steal" its
assets. We wanted only to resolve our differences in an equitable
    manner. "

NCYI was following the rules of its constitution which we recognize guides our branch
and all the other branches that call themselves Young Israel. That is what seperates us
from other organizations. We have standards.

And, according to the constitution, It would be up to the delegates to expell or not. Not
    the "so called" organization.

So to be fair , NCYI conducted itself admirably.

  • Is Kagan’s Jewishness Being Used Against Her?   2 years 46 weeks ago

I guess the oldest Jewish women's organization in the country is not a major American Jewish organization?? As the Jewish Week surely knows, the National Council of Jewish Women endorsed Elena Kagan last month and has been working hard across the country for her confirmation.

We did not take Kagan's religion into account when we considered whether to endorse her. The innuendos about her Jewishness are indeed disturbing as have been comments made about key constitutional rights and the slurs against the legacy of Justice Thurgood Marshall.

Those in the Jewish community who continue to ignore judicial nominations do so at their peril -- the peril to the issues about which we care so much. Fortunately, there are those like NCJW who are deeply and actively involved.

  • Netanyahu In D.C., The Sequel   2 years 46 weeks ago

Obama is a cynically calculating politician. "Right" and "wrong" are not part of his approach; at the moment, he supports Israel only because he learned that the American Jews outside of J Street do not support his attack on Israel.

Such a person cannot be trusted. By now, we know that Obama's natural bent is anti-Israel and pro-Moslem; accordingly, he should be stalled for the remaining 2 and a half years, and then, hopefully, voted out.

Real business can be done only with someone who has genuine understanding of the Middle East; Obama seems unable or unwilling to learn. He is not a part of the Middle East solution, he is a part of the Middle East problem.

  • Is Kagan’s Jewishness Being Used Against Her?   2 years 46 weeks ago

Elena Kagan is against the first and second amendment which automatically makes her unfit to a judge in the highest court in the land!!!

  • Is Kagan’s Jewishness Being Used Against Her?   2 years 46 weeks ago

Elena Kagan is not qualified for the supreme court! She is nothing but an Obama operative who will do his biding if she is confirmed! She is against free speech, she thinks the government should be allowed to ban books they disagree with. Hitler burned books too! When she was solicitor general she blocked the 9/11 victims families from suing the Saudis!!

She is a socialist and the last thing we need is some radical left wing activist on the supreme court and who gives a damn that she's jewish! just because she's Jewish, doesn't make her qualified for the highest court in the land! She's against the 1st and 2nd amendment which makes her unfit to be a judge!!!

Affirmative action is reverse racism which is also in favor of!!

43 year occupation. You can't make occupation pretty by disguising opposition as antisemitic. This occupation will end. Or boycotts, divestment will continue. Isolation will continue. Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela compare Israel in the West Bank to apartheid South Africa. Tutu supports boycott and divestment. Look a the situation. You can't argue pretty up occupation, Israel only settlement, Israel only roads in the West Bank surrounded by Palestinians on all sides. You can't fluff up what Israel has done to itself. It is what it is. Demolitions, settlements, West Bank apartheid. It ain't pretty.

  • Young Israel Movement In Turmoil Over Upstate Shul   2 years 46 weeks ago

I grew up in the Young Israel of Brooklyn. My father a"h,was the first Magid Shieur on Talmud in this Y.I. and the first Magid Shieur in Gemara in any Y.I. I am aware of.At that time it was common practice for members to enter the buliding and remove their hats and remain B'gilu Rosh, unless they entered the Shul or Beis Medrash. Most of the Mispallelim carried handkerchiefs and their yarlmakas in their pockets while walking through the streets to Shul on Shabbos. It was common to have mixed dancing at all functions that had music.
From this generation blossomed a wonderful dor of shomrei Torah Umitzvos and people with Yiras Shamayim and Yiras Hakavod for 'true' Talmedei Chachamim. I dare to say that Taharas Hamishpacha was NOT followed by the majority of the K'hilla at the time Iwas growing up.This was even true amoung Yeshiva parents.
There are ways of bringing change. It's refered to as 'tachsesei milchama'.BUT we must have people who know the proper 'tachsesei milchama'.Not to have Baryonim (anashim reikim, pochazim lamilchama),lead the fight.
It is hurtful to see such bickering develop in the most important modern (used in its most glorious way)orthodox movement that was responsible for seeing such a beautiful flurishing of American Orthodox Judaism.
Let's try to live by the principle of'D'racheha Darchei Noam' as explaind by Chazal.

  • Broader Gun Rights: Bad For The Jews?   2 years 46 weeks ago

I wouldn't expect anything else from a representative of the reform movement. They took the guns away in Germany before Hitler started his final solution. The criminals will always have guns, no law can or will change that. The only defense against these perps is to have a fire arm and the proper training to go with it. This decision by the Supreme Court is good for the Jews as well as every other law abiding citizen.

  • Media Roundup: After The Flotilla, Cracks On The Right?   2 years 46 weeks ago

Israel should get ahead of the curve and keep its destiny in its own hands. Grant Gaza independence, end the buycott, and cut off all electricity and all hamanitarian aid pending the release of Gilad Schalit. There are no borders to negotiate, no settlers to remove. This could be done with the stroke of a pen.

As you said so powerfully, there is no such thing as a little nonviolent, there is no such thing as a little bit at war. Once Gaza war, any rockets and/or bombs coming from the country of Gaza should be met with the full force of Isreal's military might, mostly through the air, both to limit Israel's casualties, and to respond to the provocation accordingly. Attacks through the air will be met by counterattacks through the air.

In Judeah and Samaria, the eventual answer will be to develop the economy so that true peace will be beneficial to the Arab residents. Since a true peace will involve tourism and open borders, in that context, the settlements, and the borders, become issues that can be addressed.

With good will, peace is always possible. If their is no good will, no concessions can bring peace.

  • Mike Huckabee loves Israel, but will Jewish voters love him?   2 years 46 weeks ago

My fellow Jews often suffer “progressive group think”. There is a lot of good in many of the people which progressives often demonize. Many of the comments are uninformed projections of personal bias. In fact many Jewish posts concerning Christians and conservatives are just as knee jerk ignorant as the anti-Semites who post bigoted propaganda against Israel and Jews.

  • Young Israel Movement In Turmoil Over Upstate Shul   2 years 46 weeks ago

YI is not moving the the right. the ignore the halacha of going to a Jewish court! NCYI are just like the reform movement. Change with the times, Beis din doesn't apply nowadays....Whats next shabbos?

Who agrees with me (to any extant at the least)

  • Is Kagan’s Jewishness Being Used Against Her?   2 years 46 weeks ago

Jew or non-Jew, she should not be ratified. Her religion should not be held against her, for sure, but also, she should not be ratified because she is Jewish (or Hispanic, or a female, or African-American, etc.) nor should we believe (if she is not ratified) that she didn't get it because she is Jewish.

Nonsense. It is not the media's fault that shameful actions bring shame. If one wishes to avoid embarrassment the trick is to not behave embarrassingly.

Like Larry Schatt, I also wondered what was in Sen. Graham's mind when asking where she was on Xmas. But, by now I'm wondering why that's never asked or written about. At least, I've never seen anything on that subject.

  • Top Ten Reasons To Hate Newsweek's Annual Top Rabbis List   2 years 46 weeks ago

Surprise, surprise, an Orthodox Jew showing disrespect for the Reform Movement? Sadly all too prevalent & not at all shocking. Hurtful? Always. But surprising? Never.

I was, until recently, employed by the Reform Movement (& therefore by a few rabbis on the list!) & we were always happy to see our leaders on it (the list doesn't lean toward any one movement, for which I give the authors due credit), but I, too, find this list to be, for the most part, entirely arbitrary - and increasingly redundant.

  • Young Israel Movement In Turmoil Over Upstate Shul   2 years 46 weeks ago

There are other rules in the Young Israel Constitution like having Sabbath Observant officers and ethical rabbis but certain wealthy YI congregations flout those rules and Lerner not only doesn't enforce them, he excuses them and even forged documents for one of them.

  • Rubashkin’s Wife: Sholom Deserves ‘Time Served’   2 years 46 weeks ago

A Jew in prison bears a unique challenge, there is no community to shield him or place to hide. His worse enemies many times are Jew hating jailers who let sadistic inmates know that he is unprotected. The cornered Jew cannot help himself, and if he can afford it must quickly find a few bodyguards. The best choice would be an assortment of Rabbis, corrupt jailers , and gang leaders. If he is broke he better find something to offer or else he will be psychologically tortured and driven insane.

Jeff, I am upset with Rabbi Lamm's comments because a) goyim is a rude way of referring to gentiles and b) while Rabbi Lamm is of course free to disagree with Reform's patrilineal descent policy (and I would be shocked if he didn't), it would be nice for him to show more respect to Reform Jews, even those whom he regards to be "goyim."

  • Why Do They Hate Us?   2 years 46 weeks ago

You are missing the point entirely by not asking the question of yourself, "Why do we hate the Palestinians so much that we think that they should move over for us to create a nation-state on top of their graveyard?"

    Answer that one please.

The one state-secular solution is the only solution for a patch of earth which is holy to all three Abrahamic faiths and on which Palestinians have lived for centuries.

Take the log out of your eyeball.
