what exactly does she mean orthodox, but not about labels
"US Center for Disease Control and Prevention". Autism is not a disease, not contagious and since we do not know what causes it (everybody has a theory), we cannot prevent it. AND in cases of Aspergers, they often leave the 'sufferer' with capabilities greater/other than neuro normals. Accommodation to idiosyncrasies works better than yada yada yada. My brother almost got pushed to special education for mentally handicapped. My father intervened and my brother now has 2 engineering degrees. Lay off, do not lay on and micro manage.
As managing editor for the "popular drug culture magazine High Times" and as a Jew, I'd like to welcome the Kahns to the cannabis industry and thank them in advance for helping to relieve pain by providing medical marijuana to patients in the D.C. community. Mazel tov!
I don't know what the big deal is about dairy desserts (except for cheese cake). My mother was a very good baker (& I have been told that I am), & I don't recall that she ever made anything that wasn't pareve. With the exception of my muffin tin, all my baking equipment is pareve. Margarine subs for butter. Other liquids sub for milk.
Perhaps they go to the extreme of what they think is expected of them. All those years in Zionistic schools and camps. They think this is the ultimate of what their parents and teachers expect, when all we expect is a better understanding of our history and a positive feeling toward Israel. Unfortunately, through our own devices, we allow our children to get brainwashed into believing like an extremist who does what they are told, only because they are told to do it. Moreover, all we want for our children is to have a positive experience for the length of there stay on earth. Religion can enhance that experience, but at such extremes can only ruin their chances.
Great article! As always Rabbi Greenberg is wise, clear and fair in his words. è absurd what do Haredim in Israel. è shameful pursue these women or liberal Jewish religious practices. We were not persecuted for millennia just by being different? Now Israel can afford it? A people many faces, many voices.
While I honor the accomplishment of Mr. Kurlander in being able to climb the ladder that he has, I whole-heartedly disagree that the door is wide open for ALL.
It seems clear to me that Mr. Kurlander is unaware of his own priveleges. From the looks of it, he is a white, cis-gender, AFFLUENT Jew in a democratic state. The idea that the entire queer Jewish community has his same opportunities available to him is simply not true.
Shalom Jay; Enjoyed your column, and interview. When you have a minute, please send info. on your classes. Thanks; shaya
If they're "kosher enough" for you, Quorn cutlets are a decent chicken analog. They bill themselves as mycoprotein, which I think means they're some kind of mushroom grown in a vat. And milchiks.
SO often, our focus has been on extending the lives of patients to the exclusion of the quality of their lives. When done appropriately, as clearly seems to be the case with the Kahns, distributing marijuana for medicinal use can do just that.
Burger Bar and Kosher Delight stepped up to the plate when no one else did to give kosher food to the kosher public...Giving them a slam up front.
I agree with much of what Rabbi Greenberg writes.
I invite him to similarly advocate for and defend the rights of Jews who seek to pray on the Temple Mount. The issues and counter issues are very similar and I would expect that the minority of Jews who wish to pray at the holiest site for the Jewish people are not taken less seriously simply because they represents a more Orthodox/ less voiced perspective than that associated with Women of the Wall.
I think it's important for people who need this, be given it. We regulate alcohol & tobacco sales, and pot should be regulated the same. No difference..or support growing pot without psychoactive effects. Also allow hemp growing for paper, clothes, fuel
and food!
This is an honor well deserved. Luria would not be what it is today, and what it will be tomorrow, without Bryna. Mazel tov.
Mazel tov!
Just today, I was part of a conversation with LGBT Jewish professional and lay leaders in San Diego discussing this very issue. Somewhere between helping our organized Jewish community become even more welcoming and our need to get involved is what is required. The onus is on our LGBT community to move the needle by getting involved. I am confident, we will find seats around the table.
thanks for covering this exciting effort
Englewood: Don't take it personally. This newspaper's animus is hatchet jobs on anything Orthodox. Exaggeration and inaccuracies help dish the dirt. There will be no recognition of good qualities and achievements of Englewood Orthodox community or schools printed in these pages.
Actually, HS Cohen, it sounds like the restaurant desired these changes independently of the OU, because they thought it would be good for business. Also sounds like a lot of diners weren't crazy about the name and the restaurant recognized that. The restaurant brought the OU in on their own; no one forced them, and they made these changes because ultimately they are hoping it will increase the bottom line.
What a remarkable educator and partner in the growth and development of children. So proud to have her at the helm of Luria!
Why has there been an apparent astronomical increase in reported homosexuality? is it because it has become PC, or because it is more common. The Torah, does not "care" about women, they are non-entities , and as such, do not provoke the abomination that mishkav zachor does,
these are just questions, i do not have answers, BUT BUT, liberal "jews" or others, must accept this as fundamental fact of life, empirically, Homosexuality seems to be on the increase, as has autism, aspergers, you name it.
I am pro allowing , accepting secular gay marriages, and the concomittant legal ramifications.
However, allowing mishkav zachor, if one is Torah bound, is forbidden. so what the heck is wrong with a secular marriage as long as the Reform or Conservative synagogue accepts the couple fully. Gay marriage is not marriage,. it is an alliance, i do not denigrate that. Strange that the Torah does not care one iota what women do, because women were basically chattel, and had no standing, in the community, which is why if a women was raped., the father got the Pitsuim, and why, in the Torah, where there are extensive lists of forbidden unions, "gilui arayot" in acharei mot and in kiddushim, the father daughter union is not mentioned, she was chattel. the mother and granddaughter are mentioned.
The mishnah likes to think, that "by inference" or by "implication" obviously the daughter was forbidden. when does the bible make such assumptions? the talmud, or whatever mishna gemorrah, i am am haaretz, examines intimately, every instance when something is repeated twice, slightly differently . the rabbis, gee, i am an ignoramus, whether Chazal, Rishonim, Tosafot, it's all greek to me, spends an incredible amount of energy in explaining why something is said twice, only twice, dafka,
However, however, most Rabbis never noticed that the father daughter gilui arayot is strangely absent, just not there, in no lists, and what to make of that? she was chattel. daughter was chattel, if raped, the father got the pitsuim (monetary damages). And why was Yaakov scared to death when his two sons avenged Dinah's rape? he didnt give a flying. why were three of our esteemed forefathers, first and best example Abraham , to save their own skin, willing to declare their wives "sisters" to save their lives, and basically basically turn their wives into whores. This is historical fact. Abraham, Mordechai, someone help me here a third of our Gedolim passing off their wives as sisters, into forced harlotry to save their own expletive deleted necks. Abram, .with Sarai, twice, Yitzchak with Rachel . Bunch of upstanding citizens, nachon???? and this is what our Bible is based on? no wonder no one seems to get upset about repeated and continual sexual abuse in the orthodox community , from mod. orth liberal YU to the lowest denominator, oy, well, clearly opinion, Satmar, particularly since Nehemiah Weberman's conviction and sentence to 103 years, shortened in half, sweet. Maybe the two internecine rebbes (sic) will time share his cell with him, particularly the kiryat yoel one who called the victim a slut and zonah, until the last moments, and 500k bribe turned down to drop the case , some say more, much more was offered to the family to drop the case,
Kol Hakavod to the victim to endure 13 grueling hours of cross examination on the witness stand, while 4 scum satmars were illegally photographing her IN THE COURTROOM, the more to intimidate,
We have a long long history of Jewish Tsadikim (sic) honoring their wives, and the women in the community in general, every (expletive) issue can be resolved, through pilpul, electronic garage lights, etc etc but they can't expletive find a way to release agunot, enough to make one want to, sheesh, there is no alternative save "ah-pee-chorus", aizeh chaval
If this turns out to be true it means our law enforcment failed us at every level. From beat cops patroling parade to D.A. Office the state police where murders happened, if the 3 slain were cops the killer would have been found. Not to mention the FBI failed us many times, but the CIA. It sounds like our leaders failed us. The government did not even stop their state aid. This is a tragic terrorist attack that needs to be the wake up call for America to demand better from its people. God bless Boston God bless the victims. Now good Americans need to start demanding our government protect us. Start by fireing those in charge who dropped ball. We need another Ronald Reagan in these times. Maybe john McCaine & Rudy Guliani.
Wonderful review, Carrie. Makes me want to see the exhibit, that's for sure. Thank you for sharing.
Bryna Leider is very deserving of this recognition. She is a true professional. The selection committee made a wise choice in choosing Bryna for this award.
What a beautiful tribute!
