On Monday night, 19 wineries, wine stores and wine importers offered hundreds of selections at The Jewish Week’s fifth annual Grand Kosher Wine Tasting. The event, held at City Winery, the airy event space on Varick Street in Manhattan, was timed to arrive on the heels of the last month’s publication of The Jewish Week’s 2014 Kosher Wine Guide.

Have Yourself A Happy (Second) Chanukah

For many, the winter holiday season can sometime feel like elbowing for room at the family table: Chanukah, Christmas, Kawaanza, Solstice, (Festivus!)…the list goes on.

But this year, latkes came with a slice of pumpkin pie.  And while it was nice to spin the dreidel in-between bastings, for many the Festival of Lights should come with a side of snow.

Lou participated in one of my first Downtown Seders at the Knitting Factory in 1994. In our version of this ancient ritual, we take the Haggadah and allocate the sections among musicians, thinkers, poets, political figures, etc. Each of the Four Children are represented, and I recall thinking if I should ask Lou to be the “bad” child or the “wise” child. I think that year John Zorn ended up being the bad child and Lou was the Wise Child and read one of his poems.

Rabbi Marc Schneier, who hobnobs with hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons, didn’t make the cut. Neither did Dovi Scheiner of the relentlessly hipster Soho Synagogue. And as for the rabbi who penned “Kosher Sex,” was the guru to Michael Jackson and who recently landed in The New Yorker’s Talk of the Town column — no, not even Shmuley Boteach made the list.

Not too long ago I found myself sitting on an overheated, crowded train heading to a winery. Whenever possible I like to use public transportation when I visit wineries, to avoid driving after tasting. But what made this ride unusual was that it was on a No. 1 train headed to a winery located in Manhattan’s most perennially hip neighborhood, Soho.
