Hoenlein Denounces Lack of U.S. Officials Outrage After Itamar Murders

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Malcolm Hoenlein, speaking for the foreign policy umbrella for U.S. Jewish groups, denounced governments including the Obama administration for lacking outrage after parents and three children were slaughtered in a West Bank settlement.

"If governments, even our own, do not stand up" then the Jewish people must "shriek and condemn and take action," Hoenlein, the executive vice president of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, said Thursday at a memorial service for the Fogels.

State ‘Disturbed’ by Reports of Mughrabi Square Naming After Terrorist

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The State Department called "disturbing" reports that Palestinian Authority officials attended the renaming of a square after a terrorist, saying it condemned such commemorations.

"We are very disturbed by these reports and are seeking clarification from the Palestinian Authority," a State Department official told JTA. "We condemn any commemoration of acts of terrorism and underscore that all parties have an obligation to end incitement."

Response to Itamar Attack Prompts Israelis to Ask Whether Palestinians are Serious About Peace

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- The Palestinian reaction to the grisly killings of five Israeli family members in the Jewish settlement of Itamar, on the West Bank, has prompted many Israelis to ask the same question of the Palestinians that the world often asks of the Israeli government: Are they really serious about peace?

On the one hand, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas went on Israel Radio on Monday to condemn the March 11 killings of the Fogel family members, including a 4-year-old boy and a 3-month-old girl, as “despicable, inhuman and immoral.”

Alaska Airlines Detains Passengers Over Tefillin

(JTA) -- An Alaska Airlines flight crew issued a security alert after three Mexican Orthodox Jews began praying with tefillin.

The flight attendants, who were concerned by the prayers being said aloud in Hebrew and the unfamiliar boxes with leather straps hanging from them, locked down the cockpit and radioed a security alert ahead to Los Angeles International Airport.

The flight originated Sunday in Mexico City. It was met at the Los Angeles airport by fire crews, foam trucks, FBI agents, Transportation Security Administration personnel and police, according to Reuters.

Abbas Denounces Murders in Itamar on Israel Radio

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called the killing of five members of a Jewish family "despicable," "inhuman and immoral."

"A human being is not capable of something like that," Abbas continued in Arabic during an interview Monday morning on Israel Radio. Abbas' words were translated into Hebrew by the interviewer.

The terrorist attack that left a family of five dead in the West Bank settlement of Itamar was a horrific act. Israel is in mourning, which is fitting, and Israelis are angry, which is understandable.

Forces Search for Killer of Parents, 3 Children in West Bank Settlement

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israeli military and police forces continue to scour the West Bank for a suspected Palestinian terrorist who stabbed a Jewish couple and three of their children to death in their West Bank home.

The forces were also deployed throughout the West bank Sunday to prevent revenge attacks by Israeli settlers.

 March 12, 2011 (JTA) -- An Palestinian terrorist stabbed a couple and three of their children to death in their home in a West Bank settlement.
"Israel will not stand by idly after such a despicable murder and will act vigorously to safeguard the lives of the citizens of Israel and punish the murderers," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement released after the Sabbath eve attack in Itamar in the northern West Bank.

Israeli Lawmakers Discuss Google Street View

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- A team of Knesset Cabinet members met to discuss security and privacy concerns surrounding the operation of Google Street View in Israel.

Google Street View, an on-line mapping tool which provides a three-dimensional view of buildings, landmarks, and streets around the world, is set to be operated in Israel in coming months.
