The Curious Case of Anthony Weiner: A Cautionary Tale

Special to the Jewish Week

"Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive…"

Sir Walter Scott could not have been more right, as my congressman, Anthony Weiner, discovered this past week. The problems inherent in the lewd pictures, incomprehensibly bad judgment, and arrogant assumption of invincibility were only exacerbated ten times over by the untruths that followed. The whole affair is a tawdry mess, and an embarrassment.

Mixed Media: Lessons In Unplugging

Twenty years later, a book sparks an exchange between author and reader.

Writing a book, I recently told a friend, is like putting a message in a bottle and throwing it in the ocean. You never know who might find it, read it and think of it.

It’s been 20 years since I wrote my first book, “The Search for God at Harvard,” and I still occasionally get notes about it from unexpected places. Sometimes I learn more from my correspondents than I ever put in that original bottle.

Jewish Techs to Meet Face to Face

Cross-posted at blog.RabbiJason.com

It's not uncommon for tech savvy Jews in Cyberspace to develop online relationships with other Jews who frequent some of the same social networking sites and blogs. These relationships, however, often remain in Cyberspace. Sure, there are the occasional conferences and retreats in which techie Jews will meet in the "real world," but most of the communication takes place online.

The NYC Jewish Tech Meetup seeks to bring together Jews who tech for face-to-face networking.

Even iPhone apps have entered the Passover preparation business

Just Thinking About Driving on Shabbat

Previously on the "Jewish Techs" blog, I discussed the technical halachic (Jewish legal) minutae surrounding the permissability of using the Amigo Shabbat Scooter from the Israeli-based Zomet Institute. The Shabbat Scooter is made by Michigan-based Amigo, founded by Allan Thieme, which began making the Jewish Sabbath-approved scooters six years ago.

Will rabbis allow a vehicle controlled by the mind to be used on the Jewish Sabbath?

Haredi Orthodox Rabbis Ban Internet

Late last year, Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) rabbis banned the popular blog Voz Iz Neias and even went so far as to try to have it taken down. Now, FailedMessiah.com reports that the Agudath Israel of America's Moetzet Gedolei HaTorah has issued a ban prohibiting its adherents from using the Internet without a filter.

Jewish Organizations and New Technology

The Jewish Week's Aaron Herman reports from the 2011 Non-Profit Technology Conference in Washington, DC. The Schusterman Family Foundation and Darim Online hosted an affinity group session to educate Jewish professionals in using emerging technologies more effectively in their organizations.

Facebook and Anorexia

According to clinical psychologist Esther Altmann, writing on the MyJewishLearning website, "Anorexia and bulimia are most prevalent within upwardly mobile demographic groups, and are amongst the most emotionally and physically devastating disorders affecting young Jewish women. The Jewish community has become increasingly aware that eating disorders are a serious health concern and, in some cases, a life threatening condition."

Is Facebook use contributing to eating disorders in young women?
