Steinhardt To Orthodox: Drop ‘Myopia,’ Aid Other Jews

The schism between Orthodox and non-Orthodox Jews in this country is not only ideological (as to whether God or man wrote the Torah, for example) or increasingly political (whether President Bush’s support for Israel makes him worthy of our backing). Each group also has the perception that the other is not doing enough communally and philanthropically to bolster Jewish unity and survival.

Steinhardt Pledges $10 Million

Jerusalem — Calling Jewish education the most important means of assuring the survival of American Jewry, philanthropist Michael Steinhardt challenged the Jewish establishment in North America and Israel to launch a Fund for the Jewish Future. He pledged to give $10 million, provided the sum would comprise no more than 10 percent of the total allocation.
