Ron Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), called upon Hillary Clinton to present the organization’s second annual Theodor Herzl Award to Marion and Elie Wiesel last month at the Waldorf-Astoria.

“We have come to know Hillary Clinton as our former First Lady, former United States Senator, and former Secretary of State and our future…”

Lauder didn’t have to finish.

Clinton recalled a lecture Wiesel gave at the White House on the eve of a new millennium. “He emphasized that indifference is more dangerous than anger and hatred,” she said.

WJC Pulls Lauder’s Name From Chavez Condolence Statement

No sooner did the World Jewish Congress issue a statement saying its president, Ron Lauder, and its Latin American Jewish Congress president had sent condolences to the family of the late Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez than Lauder’s phone began ringing.

Rabbinic Abuse Case Hits Snag

A rabbinic investigation into charges of sexual harassment against a prominent colleague seems to have sparked its own controversy. The Jewish Week has learned that a committee from the Rabbinical Council of America, the largest organization of Orthodox rabbis in the country, has shared the findings of an eight-month investigation with the accused, Rabbi Mordechai Tendler, a well-known spiritual leader in the Monsey community, to allow him to prepare a defense.
