Weprin Associate Reports Threat As House Race Heats Up

 A consultant and former aide to Democrat David Weprin, who is running in a special election to succeed former Rep. Anthony Weiner, received a threatening voice mail saying "your says are numbered," according to the New York Observer. The paper's political blogger, Azi Paybarah, said he heard the message after it was forwarded to him by the consultant, Mary Simon, a former finance director of Weprin's campaign.

Gallup: Jews Still Solidly Back Obama

The latest Gallup poll shows a "solid majority of Jewish Americans still approve of Obama," and they may be his most loyal segment of the population. President Obama's Jewish approval level was 60 percent in June, about 14 points above the general public. Among Jewish Democrats his rating was 85 percent, compared to 51 percent among observant Jews, who attend synagogue at least once a week and tend to be more conservative than most other Jews.

We are pleased to see the report this week that President Obama plans to visit Israel. It’s about time.

According to The Jerusalem Post, U.S. Ambassador to Israel James Cunningham told Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin that the president “wants to visit Israel and will do so.”

No date was mentioned, but the ambassador said the trip is on the president’s agenda.

Reps. Call On U.S. To Ensure Safety Of Americans In Gaza Flotilla

(JTA) -- Six Democratic lawmakers urged U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to ensure the safety of the American citizens who join the Gaza flotilla.

U.S. Reps. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), William Clay (D-Mo.), Sam Farr (D-Calif.), Bob Filner (D-Calif.) and Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) signed a letter to Clinton last Friday expressing their concern for the safety of the passengers who will be aboard the U.S. ship The Audacity of Hope. Filner is Jewish.

With President Barack Obama announcing — to nobody’s surprise — his intention to seek a second term, and Republicans fighting for the chance to oppose him, this might be a good time to lay out our early views on the 2012 election.

No, we’re not making endorsements. Consider this, instead, a plea for a sober and respectful debate on the candidates and their positions on a wide range of issues, starting with the always explosive issue of U.S. Middle East policy.

Obama taps Shapiro for U.S. envoy to Israel

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- President Obama nominated Daniel Shapiro to be the United States ambassador to Israel, signaling an intensification of U.S. involvement in the region.

Obama made the formal announcement on Wednesday; it had been rumored for weeks.

Shapiro, currently the top National Security Council official handling Israel and the region, would replace James Cunningham.

Shapiro, 41, is active in the Washington D.C. Jewish community and he would be the first Jewish ambassador to Israel since Daniel Kurtzer, who served from 2001 to 2005.

With Israeli-Palestinian negotiations back in the deep freeze, the past few days have seen a flurry of speculation about possible movement on the Israel-Syrian diplomatic front. Last month President Barack Obama appointed the first ambassador to Damascus since 2005. This week Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice president of the Presidents Conference, met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus, prompting speculation he was there at the behest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
