Israeli Troops Fire on Palestinians at Syrian Border, Killing 4

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- At least four Palestinians were killed and nine wounded after hundreds of protesters massed on Israel's border with Syria on the Golan Heights.

The violence came Sunday after hundreds of Palestinians from Syria gathered at the border to mark Naksa Day, or the Setback, marking the beginning 44 years ago of the 1967 Six-Day War.

Israeli soldiers and border control police used tear gas and fired their weapons in the air and then at protesters feet to break up the threatening crowds on the border.

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Palestinian protesters planning to breach Israel's borders again will be halted, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu, speaking Thursday evening at a conference in Jerusalem, said Syria and Iran and the Hezbollah and Hamas terrorist groups are behind the planned mass protests planned for Sunday.

Israel Files Complaint With U.N. Over Border Infiltrations

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel filed a complaint with the United Nations Security Council against Syria and Lebanon over the breach of its border by protesters.

The delegation said Monday it filed the complaint in the Security Council and with the U.N. Secretary-General's office for violation of international law.

The complaint follows demonstrations on Sunday for Nakba Day, or Catastrophe Day, marking Israel's achieving statehood. Israeli troops fired on protesters from Syria, Lebanon and Gaza who tried, and in some cases succeeded, in breaching Israel's border.

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israeli troops fired on Palestinian demonstrators who attempted to enter Israel through its border with Syria.

At least four infiltrators were reported killed and dozens wounded Sunday as hundreds of Palestinians entered the northern town of Majdal Shams which is located on Israel's border with Syria.

At least 400 Palestinian infiltrators are said to have entered Israel, while some have put the number as high as 1,000, according to Israeli media reports.

(JTA) -- Israeli officials expect Hezbollah to fire about 500 missiles a day at Israel, including 100 that will reach Tel Aviv, in the next war.

A batch of U.S. diplomatic leaks shared with Israeli newspapers through WikiLeaks were published Friday. Summaries of conversations in 2009 between U.S. officials and Israeli intelligence officials show that Israel expects the next war with Hezbollah to last two months.

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- U.S. intelligence is reportedly considering Hezbollah as a political as well as a terrorist entity.

David Ignatius, a Washington Post foreign affairs columnist with close ties to the Obama administration, reported March 18 that the distinction will appear in a National Intelligence Estimate that is now in its draft stages.

From the Israelis among the experts, diplomats and security officials assembled for the 11th annual Herzliya Conference near Tel Aviv, there were dark assessments and discussion of preparing for worst-case scenarios.

Obama Administration: Egypt Events of "Deep Concern"

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Events in Egypt are of "deep concern," the Obama administration said, and its government should show restraint.

"Events unfolding in Egypt are of deep concern," P.J. Crowley, the state department spokesman, said Friday through the Twitter social network. "Fundamental rights must be respected, violence avoided and open communications allowed."

Video posted on the Internet has depicted indiscriminate Egyptian police violence against protesters, and authorities have shut down much Internet access.

Israel is watching with concern the street demonstrations that erupted this week in neighboring Egypt and Lebanon. The fear is that an Iranian proxy-state could emerge in Lebanon and that in Egypt the autocratic rule of aging President Hosni Mubarak could be overthrown.
