Rabbi And IDF Chief Of Staff Clash Over Woman Singing At Ceremonies

Israel's military chief of staff, Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz, slammed a settler rabbi's claim that religious soldiers would rather face a firing squad than attend a ceremony in which women sing.

Rabbi Elyakim Levanon, head of the Elon Moreh hesder yeshiva, said in a Nov. 18 interview on the haredi Orthodox Radio Kol Chai that soldiers must "give their life for this issue." He was responding to the expected recommendation by a Gantz-appointed committee that would require religious soldiers to attend official ceremonies in which women performed.

Rockets Disrupt Brief Israel-Hamas Ceasefire

Within hours of a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian factions in Gaza, reportedly brokered by Egypt, two rockets were fired into southern Israel, the Israel Defense Forces reported Monday.

"Just now, despite the ceasefire, 2 more rockets were fired from gaza into southern Israel, home to more than 1 million Israelis," the IDF's spokesperson said in a Twitter message.

Israeli warplanes attacked suspected terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip today, just hours after terrorists infiltrated into southern Israel to carry out a series of coordinated attacks that killed seven Israelis and wounded dozens of others.

As many as six Palestinians – including the chief of the Popular Resistance Committees – were reportedly killed in the Israeli attack on the Gaza city of Rafa. IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Ganz that Israel targeted that area because it is “where we believe the planners of the attack are based.”

Record 104 North American Recruits Join IDF

Israel's army is getting a planeload of reinforcements from North America.

A group of 104 young men and women who will be joining the Israel Defense Forces in the coming months were aboard a 747 El Al charter flight to Israel that departed Monday from New York, a record for a single flight. The plane, sponsored by Nefesh B'Nefesh,  the Jewish Agency and Friends of the IDF, is carrying a total of 360 North Americans who are moving to Israel.

1,600 Israelis Visit Joseph’s Tomb, Accompanied by Soldiers

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Some 1,600 Jewish worshipers escorted by Israeli soldiers visited Joseph's Tomb for late night prayers, but the event was overshadowed by others who refused to leave the West Bank holy site.

The worshippers entered the site in the West Bank city of Nablus early Monday morning in coordination with the army. The visit came five weeks after a Jewish man who entered the tomb without permission was shot dead by a Palestinian policeman.

Israelis Observe National Memorial Day

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- With a minute-long siren and moment of silence in memory of its war dead, Israel began its observance of Memorial Day, or Yom Hazikaron.

The annual observance of Remembrance Day for Israel's Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism is in memory of the nearly 23,000 men and women who have fallen in battle for the State of Israel and the some 2,500 other Israelis who have been victims of terrorist attacks.

IDF Closes West Bank for Passover

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- The Israel Defense Forces have imposed a general closure on Palestinians in the West Bank during Passover.

The closure went into effect Sunday night at one minute to midnight and will remain in place until late on April 26, following the close of the holiday, according to the Israeli military.

Two Palestinians Teens Arrested in Fogel Family Murder

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Two teenage Palestinians from a West Bank village have been arrested for the murders of five members of the Fogel family of Itamar.

The Israeli military announced Sunday that Israeli security services - including the Israel Defense Forces, the Shin Bet security service and police - had arrested two teens from the nearby village of Awarta in connection with the brutal Sabbath eve murder in March.
