With Democrat Al Gore's presidential candidacy surging, the Republican National Committee and its Jewish support group are hoping to erode his support among Jews and whites by linking him to the Rev. Al Sharpton.
"Al Sharpton is a racist anti-Semite with blood on his hands," said Chris Paulitz, a spokesman for the RNC in Washington who is gathering information on controversial Sharpton statements on behalf of national chairman Jim Nicholson. "He is the David Duke of the Democrat Party. Why has Al Gore and most of the Democrat Party embraced this hate-monger?"
In asserting that America is "better off" for having a local black-owned radio station like WLIB, Vice President Al Gore, in a presidential debate Monday night in Harlem, may not have realized how controversial the station is, particularly to the Jewish community.
(JTA) – A CNN commentator likened Al Gore’s environmentalism to Nazi tactics. Glenn Beck, speaking Monday on his syndicated talk show, said he made the connection when he was reading “The Years of Extermination,” a book about how Nazi Germany made the case for Genocide. “I have read these things in some places about the Jews, in some places about what’s coming, in other places on global warming,” Beck said in a broadcast captured by Media Matters, a liberal media monitor.
Gov. George W. Bush may be cruising toward the Republican nomination and a November showdown with Vice President Al Gore, but he is expected to face an uphill battle for Jewish support.
The persistent attacks on Bush and the GOP’s religious fundamentalist wing by Arizona Sen. John McCain seem to have backfired, energizing Bush forces in nine of 13 primary or caucus states. But the assault may have succeeded in redefining Bush as a tool of the party’s right wing, damaging his appeal to Jews in the general election.
The dinner was $25,000 a plate, but after the last cups of coffee were poured, most diners agreed they had gotten their money’s worth.
The real main course was Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), the Democratic vice presidential candidate, and the take at the Baltimore fund-raiser and cocktail reception last week — $975,000 — was almost double what sponsors originally anticipated.
That scene is being repeated all over the country. Joe Lieberman has turned into a kosher cash cow for the Democrats, bringing in millions of dollars to fuel the national ticket.
