Federations Launch $5.5 Million Campaign for Ethiopian Aliyah

NEW YORK (JTA) -- The Jewish Federations of North America is launching a $5.5 million fundraising campaign for Ethiopian immigration to Israel.

The campaign comes at the behest of the Israeli government, which agreed last November to bring up to 7,846 additional Ethiopians to Israel. Like Israel’s commitment, the federation’s campaign comes with an eye toward concluding mass Ethiopian aliyah; it’s called “Completing the Journey.”

Campaign to Bring More Falash Mura to Israel Gains Steam

NEW YORK (JTA) -- After months of fits and starts, advocates for Ethiopian aliyah are hoping that a visit to the African country this week by Israel’s minister of immigrant absorption will help set in motion a process that will bring some 7,500 additional Ethiopians to Israel.

So far, the Israeli government has committed to checking only 1,800 of them for aliyah eligibility and bringing those who qualify to Israel.

The American Jewish establishment is pressuring Israel to finally resolve the intractable, and controversial, Falash Mura issue by dramatically accelerating the pace to bring out the thousands of remaining Ethiopians and settling them in Israel.
