Condemnations Are No Longer Enough

Special To The Jewish Week

Israel’s leaders have lined up over the past week to condemn the two terror attacks undertaken by extremist Jews. The first attack targeted marchers in the Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade and left a 16-year-old girl dead. The second attack, firebombs targeting homes in a West Bank village, killed an 18-month-old Palestinian baby, whose older brother and parents remain hospitalized.

French Jews Protest Marine Le Pen

03/14/2011 - 20:00

PARIS (JTA) -- French Jewish leaders condemned the far right leader Marine Le Pen at a rally in Paris.

Monday's rally was presaged by a French-Jewish radio station's plans to interview Le Pen, the daughter of notorious French politician Jean-Marie Le Pen and president of the National Front Party, which many French Jews consider anti-Semitiic. The interview was canceled amid broad community outrage.

Political incitement on the airwaves: Not a balanced equation

I didn't blog today because I was busy writing a story about political incitement, the nation's toxic political mood and the appalling shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in Tucson on Saturday. (Yes, I've finally learned how to spell “Tucson.” Keep those cards and letters coming.)

And I was busy getting frustrated by all the people who were telling me that it's important to note that it's not just right wingers who are hurling rhetorical grenades.

Well, they're right – but they're also playing cute games with the facts

ADL: Assessing Hate Speech Angle in Giffords Shooting 'Critical'

01/09/2011 - 19:00

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The Anti-Defamation League said it is "critical" to determine whether the man alleged to have shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was influenced by hate speech.

"It is critical to determine whether the alleged shooter, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, acted alone or with others, and whether he was influenced by extremist literature, propaganda or hate speech," the ADL said in its statement Sunday.

Memo Notes Giffords’ Judaism in Motives of Alleged Attacker

01/09/2011 - 19:00

(JTA) -- A U.S. Department of Homeland Security memo reportedly notes that Gabrielle Giffords is Jewish in describing the motives of the Arizona congresswoman's alleged assailant.

The memo, obtained by Fox News Channel, says that Jared Lee Loughner mentioned American Renaissance, an extremist anti-immigrant group, in some of his own postings.

Did Heated Rhetoric Play Role in Shooting of Giffords?

01/08/2011 - 19:00

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The 8th District in southern Arizona represented by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords comprises liberal Tucson and its rural hinterlands, which means moderation is a must. But it also means that spirits and tensions run high.

Giffords’ office in Tucson was ransacked in March following her vote for health care reform -- a vote the Democrat told reporters that she would cast even if it meant her career. She refused to be cowed, but she also took aim at the hyped rhetoric. She cast the back-and-forth as part of the democratic process.

Shooter Held in Arizona Attack, Feds Probing Ties to Hate Group

01/08/2011 - 19:00

(JTA) – The gunman that shot 17 people, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, is currently being held by police and has been described as "unstable."

The gunman, identified by media as Jared Lee Loughner, on Saturday shot 17 people, killing six of them, including a 9-year old girl and a federal judge, John Roll. The gunman was tackled and arrested.

Giffords (D-Ariz.) remained in critical condition Sunday morning after being shot in the head.

Giffords Staffer Gabe Zimmerman Killed in Arizona Shooting

01/08/2011 - 19:00

(JTA) -- Gabe Zimmerman, director of community outreach for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was killed in the Arizona shooting that killed six and injured 11 others, including Giffords.

Giffords (D-Ariz.) remained in critical condition Sunday morning after being shot in the head.

Giffords was outside one of her signature "Congress at your corner" events outside a Safeway in Tucson, the district she represented, when a gunman approached and shot her in the head on Saturday.

Giffords shooting: Figures it was Arizona

My first reaction on hearing of the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz) in a Tuscon Safeway parking lot: it figures it was Arizona.

In a country where political rage and incitement pose as entertainment and the gun lobby successfully boosts a radical, mostly insane view that the rights of gun owners trump all other rights, Arizona is a place where this sickness rages with particular virulence.

WaPo: PA taking "extreme steps" against radical imams

It's a cliché in pro-Israel circles that the Palestinian Authority is doing nothing to curb anti-Israel, anti-Semitic incitement, but a story by the always-excellent Janine Zacharia in today's Washington Post tells a more nuanced story.
