Another Jewish Supreme Court possibility - and rising talk about a "Protestant-free" court

So another Jewish name has surfaced in the raging speculation over President Obama's choice to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens: Martha Minow, dean of the Harvard Law School and one of the President's former professors (See this story in today's Boston Gl

Take Your Daughter To Church Day

Looks like, despite my railing against Joseph Reyes, the court has ruled in his favor. (Imagine that: not everyone is swayed by my opinions!)

Reyes is the Catholic Chicago dad who had his 3-year-old daughter baptized without his estranged Jewish wife’s permission.

The Jewish Oscar

The Jews, we well know, run Hollywood. But even the most unreconstructed anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist probably would never had anticipated a year like this at Sunday’s Academy Awards: three Jewish-themed films (“Inglorious Basterds,” “A Serious Man” and “An Education”) vying for the Best Picture nod and an Israeli contender (“Ajami”) up for Best Foreign Language Film.

The Coen Brothers’ “A Serious Man” is one of three Jewish-themed films vying for Best Picture this Sunday.

The Politics Of Humor

Special To The Jewish Week

I was first baffled, then amused, and then finally inspired when I woke up this morning and read “The Daily Show” writer Rob Kutner’s blog entry on The Huffington Post: “My new book, ‘Apocalypse How,’ is about how the world is about to end ... and why we should be psyched! It’s the first-ever work of apocalyptic literature that ‘accentuates the positive’ — and teaches you how to not just survive, but thrive....”

Short Fridays

Friday, October 24th, 2008 1: Joe The Plumber Almost all references by leftists (and the ADL) to illegal immigrants simply refer to them as immigrants, their illegal status conveniently ignored. To be against illegal immigration is to branded as anti-immigrant, not anti-illegal immigrant.

Obama disses Jews with Chanukah party invitations...oh PLEASE

Honestly, covering the Jewish beat in Washington is just sometimes too much to take.

I mean, seriously does anybody care if the white House invited 400 or 4000 prominent Jews to this year's White House Chanukah party?

Judging by several calls I've had, you'd think a mere 400 guests at a party that wasn't even a feature of the White House until the early 2000s was just one more sign of how President Obama doesn't like Jews, or a signal to Israel or something.

Jewish, Israeli guests at White House Ramadan dinner

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009 It wasn’t the first Ramadan dinner at the White House, but it was the first with an Israeli guest. And what a guest: Michael Oren, the spanking new Israeli ambassador.

Minnesota Supreme Court rules, Coleman’s toast, Franken to be seated

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 Eight months after Minnesota voters went to the polls, the state is about to get a new senator. And it’s not the old one – Norm Coleman, the Republican whose last appeal of the razor-thin election was rejected by the Minnesota Supreme Court on Tuesday in a unanimous decision. A lower court ruled that Democrat Al Franken, the former Saturday Night Live comic, won the election by 312 votes, but Coleman continued to argue that an additional 4000 absentee ballots should be counted.

Reform leader, former Holocaust Museum official arrested in Darfur protest

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 When it comes to Darfur demonstrations, Rabbi David Saperstein of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism is a recidivist. On Monday Saperstein was arrested in a protest at the Sudanese embassy just down the street from RAC headquarters, along with several members of Congress and a former official of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council.
