In 2000 Rabbi Shohama Wiener was invited to lead High Holy Days services at Kona Beth Shalom, a synagogue on the Big Island of Hawaii, where the congregation’s greeting of choice is “Shaloha.” When she wasn’t conducting services or polishing her sermons, the rabbi swam and snorkeled alongside congregants in the nearby Pacific Ocean.

But some of the greatest political orators have had clunkers all their own.   Ted Kennedy, to name one.   In 1979, when he let it be known that he intended to challenge Pres. Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination, Kennedy was interviewed by Roger Mudd on CBS. What transpired was hardly inspiring.

Stocked full of kosher meat products from Iowa, an 18-wheeler lumbers across South Dakota en route to Seattle, lurching to a brief stop along Interstate 90 in central Montana. Under snow-capped mountains in Bozeman, a lone, sheitel-wearing redhead drives to a rest area on the highway, waiting for the semi to appear. When it does, she unloads what in Big Sky country is precious cargo — the kosher-certified meat and chicken that helps sustain the handful of observant Jews in this picturesque college town.

Resort Revved Up For Facelift

It won't be the Concord Resort Hotel we once knew (Jewish through and through) but it will still serve kosher blintzes and sour cream. The new owners of the Concord Resort Hotel insist there will still be a Jewish ambiance when the hotel, one of the largest in the world. It reopens the main building Oct.1 after a $40 million to $50 million renovation.
