Liberal Jewish Groups Optimistic About Stevens’ Replacement

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The Jewish groups who liked John Paul Stevens as a Supreme Court justice are getting ready to dish out the same like to whomever replaces him.

Most of the Jewish groups closely tracking court decisions favor Stevens' liberal record, with minor qualifications, and do not believe that President Obama will choose a replacement who deviates from the norm.

The cost of a four-year private college education has passed the $150,000 mark — which is “enough to cause even the most affluent parent to want to sit down and cry,” according to Kalman Chany, author of the 2009 edition of the Princeton Review’s “Paying For College Without Going Broke.” And in 2009, the average one year tuition cost (including room and board, books, and other fees) will be $35,958 — up 5.5 percent from the previous year.

Polish and American Jewish leaders say last week’s “Mr. Pope” incident between Poland’s chief rabbi and Pope John Paul II has damaged Jewish-Catholic relations in Poland, and could undermine negotiations involving the controversial Auschwitz cross. And adding to the Auschwitz cross controversy is Riverdale Rabbi Avi Weiss, who on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council in Washington for violating his First Amendment rights by barring him from speaking at this week’s biannual board meeting.
