In a high-lonesome twang right out of the piney woods of the Ozarks, rock and roll Americanist Levon Helm sings of “a sorrow in the wind / blowin’ down the road I’ve been / I can hear it cry while shadows steal the sun.” Helm was the soulful, Arkansas-raised drummer in the pioneering ‘60s roots rock group The Band, and the song is an old gospel tune “Wide River to Cross” on his new CD, “Dirt Farmer.” It’s a prayer, really, a poignant hymn to loss but also a declaration that life rambles on, that “I’m only halfway home,

Had it been in the theater of war, it would have amounted to a surprise attack. After all, it's not every day that a celebrated general comes to a yeshiva that educates Russian Jewish youth deep in the heart of Brooklyn. And it's rarer still when that general drops a bomb, so to speak. The junior high students of the Be'er Hagolah Institutes didn't know what hit them.

Updated: J Street snags Sarah Palin, Avigdor Lieberman for Chanukah party - NOT

Monday, August 24th, 2009 Isn’t it nice that former Ark. Gov. Mike Huckabee and his fellow evangelical Christians are “so much more supportive of Israel than the American Jewish community.” That’s what Huckabee, a 2012 Republican presidential frontrunner, told the Christian Broadcasting Network after a trip to Israel that focused mostly on Jewish settlements and East Jerusalem, places most national politicians in this country try to avoid. Well, no, Huck, I think you got it wrong again.

Huckabee heading to Israel - and embracing settlers (again)

Monday, August 10th, 2009 One sure sign a politician is laying the groundwork for a future presidential bid is a sudden yearning for Israel travel.  So it must be for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee,  who will be visiting Israel next week.

Huckabee Headlines Jerusalem Reclamation Dinner

Monday, May 19th, 2008 Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a dropout from the GOP presidential field who said on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” that he’d love to be John McCain’s running mate, will appear at the New York dinner of the Jerusalem Reclamation Project on June 2. The organization, also known as Ateret Cohanim, is devoted to buying formerly Jewish property in and around Jerusalem’s Old City to strengthen Jewish presence there.
