Taking On Glenn Beck — With Poetry

04/01/2010

It’s no secret that some Jewish leaders are anxious about a national mood of choleric rage and what it means for populations that have been the targets of past populist surges, starting with the Jews.

But while few have spoken out in public, one group has struck back with biting humor.

It’s the Jewish Funds for Justice that’s behind the just-announced HaikuGlennBeck.com Web site, aimed at a talk radio host and Fox News talk show host who seems to be handsomely profiting from the recent craziness.

Beck’s comment that “social justice” is akin to Nazism provoked a biting response from Jewish Funds for Justice.

During a recent lesson about biblical patriarchs and matriarchs, fourth-graders at Manhattan’s Central Synagogue Hebrew school watched as role-playing talk show host, “Shecky Bevakasha,” mediated a dispute between Jacob’s two wives, sisters Leah and Rachel. While some students watched the Jerry Springer-like feud play out before them, others observed equally sensational Torah stories, starring Judaism’s forefathers and mothers.

Washington — They came from Memphis and they came from Midwood. They bused in from Bayside and they rode the rails from Richmond. A man who likes extinct languages, Mel Gibson had a chance to practice his Latin this summer — he made several mea culpas.   Following his drunken, sexist, profane, anti-Semitic tirade in Malibu in July, the actor-director apologized to the police officers who arrested him. He apologized in a general public statement for saying “despicable” things. He apologized “specifically to everyone in the Jewish community,” to “those who have been hurt and offended by those words.”

Obama conspiracy theory roundup: Soviet “czars” and a dangerous speech

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 I have to credit my wife with this one: on her way home yesterday, she heard a talk show host railing against all the “czars” the Obama administration has appointed, and a caller offering a creative twist.

Jewish groups react to Limbaugh - but ignore the bigger problem

Sunday, August 9th, 2009 Isn’t there something off key in the reaction of a growing number of Jewish leaders to talk show host Rush Limbaugh’s latest outrage?  Limbaugh, who has built a stellar career out of carefully orchestrated rage, apparently crossed a line when he likened Democratic health care reform advocates to Nazis and said President Obama has “a health care logo that’s right out of Adolf Hitler’s playbook.” Say what?  Do people actually believe this stuff?

‘What has 600,000 legs, 300,000 hearts and speaks with one voice?” In the hazy pre-dawn of an already hot July 14, Alecia Sachs, 43, from Miami, waved a placard with that question outside the “Today” show’s street-level studio window.
