(JTA) — China will join efforts to sanction Iran, U.S. officials said. Obama administration officials announced the breakthrough Monday during a summit in Washington on containing the threat of nuclear terrorism. Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser to the White House, said a new set of U.N. Security Council sanctions would be ready within “a matter of weeks.”
The announcements came after President Obama met with Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Note: The Polish people suffered a loss when President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, and 94 other passengers on a Russian jet, including many top Polish officials, were killed in a crash Saturday near Smolensk, Russia. Jewish leaders in Poland praised Kaczynski, 60, as a true friend of the Jewish community and Israel, and participants in the annual March of the Living wore black armbands this week in the president’s memory.
It was the hot political news of 1916. A Jewish lawyer was being seriously considered for the first time for a seat on the Supreme Court, and some Americans were upset. Louis Brandeis was too liberal, critics said.
“It was certainly easy to find anti-Jewish comments” from Brandeis’ opponents, says Jonathan Sarna, professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University, an institution named for the history-making justice.

Phoenix — While conventional wisdom has it that American Jewry is suffering from a dearth of young leadership, the preliminary findings of a major report, to be published this summer by the Avi Chai Foundation, suggest otherwise.
Nonetheless, a number of tomorrow’s leaders do not share traditional values regarding support for Israel, Jewish peoplehood, intermarriage and collective responsibility, which is worrisome to the study’s sponsor.
My father died 10 years ago and my mother almost 15 years ago, but I now find my self back in shul every morning saying Kaddish, this time for a friend. It is a sad duty to perform and a hard one. I’m not a morning person; getting out of bed and rushing off to shul is a struggle. But, as I did for each of my parents for 11 months, I am now doing for Leo Chester for a month.
I present below, in its entirety and without further comment, former mayor Ed Koch's latest essay on the tensions between the White House and Israel. In it, he concedes that some will call him alarmist, but finds some parallels between the administration's treatment of Israel and the Roman siege against Jews at Masada.
It's been ten years but historian Deborah Lipstadt still relishes her victory in the libel suit brought by Holocaust denier David Irving in London.
Lipstadt, Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies at Emory University in Atlanta, recalled her harrowing court experience at a Yom Hashoa commemoration Saturday at Young Israel of Hillcrest in Queens. President Kevin Leifer said more than 400 people packed the sanctuary for the event, which was sponsored by New York State Assemblyman Rory Lancman.
JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel's president expressed "pain, shock and distress" following the airplane crash Saturday that killed Poland's president, Lech Kaczynski, and a swath of the country's leadership.
"In the many meetings I had with President Kaczynski, I discovered a great leader, determined to press his country forward, a man very much in touch with his people, and who had adopted the viewpoint of a democratic and advanced world," Shimon Peres said in a statement Saturday.
