Emotions high, but Jewish community not opposing New York institution.

Neither Leona Zeplin nor Joyce Gales had any desire to attend last week’s raucous community board hearing over plans for an Islamic community center near Ground Zero.

But both women, each of whom lost a child in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, have strong feelings about those plans.

LVMH Honors Rabbi Arthur Schneier On His 80th Birthday

An enchanting Manhattan sunset cast a magical glow over the penthouse of the LVMH Tower on West 57th Street where a radiant Renaud Dutreil welcomed guests. Dutreil, the North America chairman of LVMH Moet Henessy Louis Vuitton, Inc., presided over a reception honoring Rabbi Arthur Schneier on his 80th birthday and Park East Synagogue on its 120th anniversary.

Synagogue president Herman Hochberg said this was a kickoff for the main event, a gala celebratory dinner, to take place on June 7 at the Waldorf-Astoria.

Will Double Senate Races Help Gillibrand?

This November will mark a rare chance for New Yorkers to vote on both their U.S. senators in the same year, which could be good for the embattled junior Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
