John Hagee

I Love Pastor Hagee Because He Loves Me

On May 23 -- which just so happens to be the day of the Salute to Israel Parade, a day that most Jews don't give a damn about and never have, except for primarily the Modern Orthodox and Conservative Zionists -- in more than 1,500 churches, most of them evangelical, the spiritual leaders will be speaking about their love for Israel, and their support for the Jewish State. That support is based on the verse in Genesis where God promises to bless those who bless the Jews.

More on Elie Wiesel, politics and Jerusalem

Reading Jewish Week editor and publisher Gary Rosenblatt's interview with Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, I can't help but wonder if this moral paragon is on his way to being perceived as just another political activist. Given Wiesel's eloquent and moving contributions to our understanding of the Holocaust and its aftermath and his stature as a moral teacher on the issue of genocide, that would be sad.

Federation Fete

Too often we take our Jewish communal successes for granted and focus on our problems. One of the ongoing success stories is the work and reach of UJA-Federation of New York, the world’s largest local philanthropy, with its more than 100 constituent agencies providing social services for Jews and others in need here in New York as well as in Israel, the Former Soviet Union and communities around the world.

New Israel Fund Grants Spark Human Rights Brouhaha

Right-wing Im Tirtzu accuses New Israel Fund —and its president — of bearing responsibility for Goldstone; NIF decries campaign to repress ‘dissent and honesty.’

Charges that the New Israel Fund supports Israeli civil rights groups that played a key role in providing information highly critical of Israel’s role in the Gaza war last year have sparked a spirited, and nasty, debate over the proper role for civil and human rights groups in a democratic state.

Locking horns over Goldstone: ad sponsored by Im Tirzu depicted Naomi Chazen, NIF president, with a horn on her head

Short Fridays

Friday, October 24th, 2008 1: Joe The Plumber Almost all references by leftists (and the ADL) to illegal immigrants simply refer to them as immigrants, their illegal status conveniently ignored. To be against illegal immigration is to branded as anti-immigrant, not anti-illegal immigrant.

Updated: J Street snags Sarah Palin, Avigdor Lieberman for Chanukah party - NOT

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 J Street, the pro-peace process lobby and political action committee, is having a holiday party – and its guest list is nothing short of stellar. Of course, the list is a put on, but that probably won’t stop the group’s legion of detractors from finding some deep and dark significance in the official invitation.

Palin Ignites New Debate On GOP Support For Israel

Comment on settlement influx seen tied to biblical prophecy

Washington Correspondent

Jewish Democrats say she’s the best thing that could happen to them in 2012, and Republicans say she’s almost beside the point as Jewish voters sour on President Barack Obama’s Israel policies, runaway budget deficits and a faltering domestic agenda.

Evangelical Split Over Israel Batters Bush

08/03/2007
Editor At Large
Evangelical Christians, long seen as a monolith in lockstep support of Israel, publicly fractured last week as two significant evangelical factions lobbied President Bush with criticism of Israel from opposite points of view. For the first time, Christians United for Israel, a major Christian Zionist group with strong ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, lobbied President Bush against the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — a solution advocated by Israel, the Bush administration and the pro-Israel Washington lobby itself.

Apocalypse Now: Iran Threat Dominates AIPAC Confab

Washington – The specter of the 1930s overshadowed  the Convention Center here as the pro-Israel lobby this week decried Iran as an existential threat to Israel and the West unseen since World War II. In comparison, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s three-day annual policy conference largely played down the Jewish state’s longstanding conflict with the Palestinians.

Christians United for…Settlements?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 I confess: because of other assignments, I didn’t get down to the Christians United for Israel Washington summit this week, the first one I’ve missed. But based on past years events and interviews with several folks who attended this week’s, I’ve reached one new conclusion about the group. From the beginning, CUFI has embraced the Israeli settlers movement in a way no major Jewish group has.
