Michael Steele: right on Afghanistan, sort of?

The whole Michael Steele controversy – the latest in a long series for the foot-in-mouth-prone Republican National Committee chairman – must be making Jewish liberals very uncomfortable.

Steele is getting savaged by fellow Republicans for saying the Afghanistan war is a “war of Obama's choosing,” and that the one thing the President should know is that you “don't ... engage in a land war in Afghanistan... because everyone who's tried over a thousand years of history has failed."

Earlier in my career, I wrote so many articles about neglected cemeteries, Jewish funeral homes and Jewish burial societies that my editor joked I was the “dead”-beat reporter.

For years, I’ve followed the plight of Bayside Cemetery, a more- than-150-year-old Jewish burial ground in Ozone Park, Queens, that has been vandalized and inadequately maintained for decades and is the subject of an ongoing lawsuit.

The Boy Scouts, of all organizations, lit a Jewish fire under Alex Rosenblatt.

Scouts honor.

Rosenblatt of Dix Hills, L.I., is a 21-year-old who never went to Hebrew school, didn’t have a bar mitzvah and whose parents don’t believe in organized religion. His only formal Jewish training came from the Boy Scouts.

“I learned a lot,” said Rosenblatt, now a senior at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. “It led to an exploration of my own faith.”

 Late last month, as Israelis celebrated the 62nd birthday of the Jewish state and the 150th of its inventor, the great Theodor Herzl, a full-page ad appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. The text was penned by another esteemed Jew, the Nobel laureate, prolific author and Auschwitz survivor Elie Wiesel. Needless to say, his piece drew a lot of attention.

 Washington — When Elie Wiesel says it’s all kosher, it’s good.

For now, anyway.

President Obama capped an intensive two weeks of administration make-nice with Israeli officials and the American Jewish community by hosting Wiesel, the Nobel peace laureate and Holocaust memoirist, for lunch at the White House.

“It was a good kosher lunch,” was the first thing Wiesel pronounced, emerging from the White House to a gaggle of reporters.

And not just the food.

Aside from having children, fiction writing is one of the best ways to leave evidence of oneself.  Unfortunately the declaration of Apartheid Week by a number of organizations and students, many with no connection to the university where the rallies are being conducted, represents only the tip of the iceberg of the effort to delegitimize the State of Israel (“Apartheid Weak,” Editorial, March 5).

I have been outraged that the universities, some of which even supply funds for these activities, allow such hate to be associated with their institutions.
