BP oil spill: Obama's 'Katrina?'

 For weeks, Republicans have been gleefully predicting that the massive BP oil spill and the uneven response of the federal government would be President Obama's Hurricane Katrina.

Generally, I've scoffed at the claim Obama's response will define his presidency – and that the definition would include the word “incompetence.”

But now I'm not so sure, but not necessarily for the reasons the Republicans say.

After a nasty inside battle, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) shoved aside the current chair of the Energy and Commerce  Committee, Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.).  Waxman won the post by a 137-122 margin in a poll of Democratic House members.

And that’s causing big problems for numerous Jewish lawmakers. Many Jewish House members - there are 30 of them - were watching the clock as today’s debate dragged on and their prospects for getting out of town in time for the beginning of Rosh Hashanah diminished with every tick.
