04/20/2010

(JTA) – Social networking sites present a new and dangerous medium for spreading anti-Semitism, panelists told a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee.

The April 14 hearing looked at the proliferation of hate speech through social media alongside such concerns as anti-Semitism being masked as anti-Israelism or anti-Westernism.

Washington — President Obama’s special envoy on anti-Semitism wants to recruit non-Jews to make her case.
Hannah Rosenthal outlined her goals in her new role during a recent address in Dallas to the annual plenum of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, the public policy umbrella she once led as president.

To combat anti-Semitism, the Jewish people need more non-Jews on their side, said Rosenthal, who spoke at a panel on anti-Semitism alongside Abraham Foxman, the Anti-Defamation League’s national director.

Hannah Rosenthal starts with a stumble

I've always admired Hannah Rosenthal. When she was executive director of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), she brought a new energy and edginess to a group that was having a hard time finding its identity in a changing Jewish world and a strong, consistent dedication to  progressive Jewish politics – which is where a majority of Jews remain, despite persistent claims to the contrary.

So I'm even more mystified than most by her recent gaffe.

Bold choice for new anti-Semitism envoy?

Friday, November 20th, 2009 It’s looking more and more like Hannah Rosenthal, the former executive director of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), will be the new State Department special emissary on anti-Semitism; her appointment could be announced as early as today, sources here say. That looks to me like an intriguing, out-of-the-box selection.

Cracking The Glass Ceiling

Citing a "glass ceiling" in Jewish communal life that has prevented women from advancing to leadership positions in national Jewish organizations and large city federations, the newly created Trust for Jewish Philanthropy has announced that its first initiative will be to tackle the gender gap. To help the project get off the ground, the philanthropist Barbara Dobkin, who founded and chairs Ma'yan, the Jewish Women's Project of the JCC of the Upper West Side, said she and her husband, Eric, are donating $1 million in seed money.
