Huckabee: the settlers’ best friend (and maybe the Armageddonists, too)

Mike Huckabee and his fellow evangelical Christians are “so much more supportive of Israel than the American Jewish community.” That’s what Huckabee, a 2012 Republican presidential frontrunner, told the Christian Broadcasting Network after a trip to Israel that focused mostly on Jewish settlements and East Jerusalem, places most national politicians in this country try to avoid. Well, no, Huck, I think you got it wrong again.

The government of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon came under fire at home this week for allegedly disregarding Palestinian civilians in its zeal to combat terrorists, and from the United Nations, which called upon Israel to remove its security barrier that Arabs call a land grab. The controversy within Israel arose after the Israeli military launched one of the largest series of air strikes against terrorists in the Gaza Strip on Monday. Five air strikes were conducted against suspected Palestinian terrorists and a weapons factory in Gaza City.

Austrian far-right leader Joerg Haider, here to run in Sunday's New York Marathon, said he met with Jewish leaders the following day to correct "prejudicial" reports spread about him by his political enemies. "All of the meetings ... with ethnic minorities, with Jewish groups, with representatives of the Jewish community have been really successful," he told The Jewish Week. "It makes me happy that we could show them that there is no sign of danger, that there is a sign of hope for them because we are the power to enforce democracy in Austria."
