Like Lucy holding out her football for Charlie Brown to kick again, President Clinton, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat once more raised the world’s expectations Monday for a breakthrough on their long-stalled peace agreement. But when the three faced an expectant White House press corps after their meeting, Clinton again voiced the phrases heard so often before.

Adelson-Backed Group Going Kaput?

Freedom's Watch faces internal dissent, results of economic meltdown

Remember Freedom’s Watch?

Early in the year, there were reports that the new, Sheldon Adelson-backed group — originally meant to generate support for the Bush administration policies in Iraq and then to support Republican congressional candidates in this year’s elections — would be a major player in this year’s political wars. Indeed, early on the well-financed group ran highly aggressive ads targeting Democratic congressional candidates on issues such as illegal immigration.

Ukraine Clamping Down On Jewish Agency

Ukraine has blocked more than 200 Ukrainian children from going to Israel this week to start their school year there under a Jewish Agency program promoting immigration to the Jewish state. The government’s roadblock against the children’s exit, say Israeli and Jewish communal officials, is but the latest in an escalating spiral of hostility between Ukraine and the Jewish Agency, an Israeli government-linked body responsible for bringing and resettling Jews in the Jewish state.

The FBI is ignoring its own guidelines on terrorism in the July 4 El Al shootings, possibly undermining America's war against Islamic extremists, several experts told The Jewish Week. The counterterrorism experts, both American and Israeli, say they are baffled by the FBI's continuing refusal to label as terrorism the Independence Day attack at the El Al counter at Los Angeles International Airport by an Egyptian gunmen that killed a female El Al ticket agent, an Israeli diamond broker, and wounded three others.

New poll: Jewish support for Obama slipping, but Jews are still top supporters

Obama disses Jews with Chanukah party invitations...oh PLEASE

Honestly, covering the Jewish beat in Washington is just sometimes too much to take.

I mean, seriously does anybody care if the white House invited 400 or 4000 prominent Jews to this year's White House Chanukah party?

Judging by several calls I've had, you'd think a mere 400 guests at a party that wasn't even a feature of the White House until the early 2000s was just one more sign of how President Obama doesn't like Jews, or a signal to Israel or something.

Under a bright sun, Guilla Boukhobza walked up to a microphone in front of the Isaiah Wall near the United Nations and cleared her throat. For the first time, she was going to publicly talk about her family's perilous expulsion from her native Libya. It was not easy, Boukhobza confided, because even a generation later, a deep fear remains about discussing the heart-rending events that forced her parents and seven siblings to leave Tripoli one step ahead of anti-Jewish mobs.

Kosher In The 'Polish White House'

Moshe Katzav's visit to Poland last week was strictly kosher. For the first time, the kitchens of the Presidential Palace and of the Belweder Palace, the "Polish White House," were koshered in honor of the Israeli president's state visit to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.
