New Suture Advance From the Technion

Scientists and researchers in universities across Israel have uncovered new advances in medicine and technology that will likely advance Israel’s position as a worldwide leader in scientific innovations.

One innovation is the use of a suture that helps reduce scarring and inflammation.

A couple years ago, I learned about a new program that merges three areas I am passionate about --Jewish camping, Israel, and technology. Israel has always embraced high technology and modern communication. Part of what has made the almost sixty-year-old nation's economy flourish in the past two decades has been the success of its hi-tech sector.

Striking Distance

Jerusalem — There were a few spots available this week in the gated parking lot outside the Hebrew University’s Givat Ram campus. That’s about the only good news that has so far come out of the strike by 4,500 senior faculty members of the country’s seven universities, the longest such strike in the country’s history.

Launched in October, just after the start of the new semester (and five months after university students waged a strike) the faculty strike has wreaked havoc in an already troubled higher education system.

Robots To Help Humans

New York businessman and philanthropist Arnold Goldstein and his wife Arlene have donated $5 million to establish the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Satellite Center at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa.

Goldstein said the center would be working with robots that could be used for warfare as well as for medical and humanitarian purposes.

Ari Sonesh came up with the idea for his 3-year-old company in the mid-1980s while he was overseeing the computer support system at Comverse Technologies in Woodbury. "I saw the potential to improve customer support services," he explained. "So I put things together and came up with an idea. I discussed it with Steve [Kowarsky at Comverse] and others, and decided it was an idea I had to commit myself to. So I left Comverse." Sonesh's idea: Allow customers to speak directly with representatives of a company through its web site.
