Joseph Gitler, a Manhattan native who worked here as a lawyer before making aliyah 10 years ago, is founder of the largest food rescue and food resource organization in Israel, Leket Israel, originally known as Table to Table.

Gitler, 35, said his group reaches 20,000 people daily in Israel and annually distributes nearly 1 million meals, 1 million sandwiches to schoolchildren, and about 14 million pounds of produce and dairy products to nearly 250 nonprofit organizations in Israel.

JERUSALEM (JTA) – On the day last week that Israel gained admission to the prestigious Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Israel's continued control over the Palestinians was eroding its global standing.

Zvi Chalamish, Israel’s consul and chief fiscal officer for the Ministry of Finance here, said the decision Monday of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to accept Israel’s application for membership followed six years of sound Israeli economic policy. The Palestinian Authority had sought to block the move. The OECD, which has as members some of the world’s largest economies, promotes free market ideas and sound regulatory policies.
