When I was in high school, I took a private course to prepare for the S.A.T.'s because that's what all my friends were doing. And, if you think about it, what does it say about university entrance exams if they require extra preparation that only some families can afford?

But lest you think this is a high and mighty commentary about class and education, don't you worry your pretty little head: It's all about my love life.

Touro College Founder Succumbs At 94

Indefatigable Dr. Bernard Lander grew school
well beyond its New York roots.

Rabbi Dr. Bernard Lander, the visionary founder and president of Touro College, which he grew from 35 students to a global network of 29 schools educating 17,500 students in New York, California, Nevada, Florida, Israel, Russia, Germany and France, died Monday of congestive heart failure at a New York hospital. He was 94.

Up until his last days, Bernard Lander continued to put in a full day of work at Touro’s 23rd Street headquarters.

About five years ago, Vincent Brown, a historian at Harvard, had to teach a seminar on the birth of black studies. Though the discipline has flourished since the 1960s, its origins were not well known, so Brown, an iPod-generation professor, thought a documentary on the topic might help. He was an amateur filmmaker himself, deft with a Camcorder, and figured he might try to make one on his own.

As a month-long string of food-consuming holidays comes to an end, Jews across the world will unbutton their waistbands and perhaps hop on a treadmill to avoid the looming threat of obesity that afflicts so many Jewish families. But those with a genetic predisposition to obesity may now have another related monster to fear — colorectal cancer.
