Vandals Strike Queens Cemetery

Graves were opened and human remains exposed when a mausoleum was broken into recently at the Bayside Cemetery, a 160-year-old Jewish cemetery in Ozone Park, Queens. Cemetery officials became aware of the damage last week after the vandalism was reported by a cemetery visitor. Owned by Shaare Zedek, a Conservative congregation on the Upper West Side, the cemetery has long been in disrepair.

For a year and a half, Shane Wamsley returned to his Salt Lake City home from his day job as a financial controller and began another one: eight hours of data entry at his computer. On weekends, he'd log even longer hours. Wamsley, working as a volunteer, was compiling a database of burial records for Bayside Cemetery, which dates back to 1842 and has approximately 35,000 graves.

Responding to a federal class action lawsuit over its management of a large Queens cemetery, an Upper West Side congregation has filed papers asserting that the plaintiffs have no relationship with the synagogue or cemetery and can’t show that they have suffered any personal damage.
