At 4 she became part of history as the patient in a medical experiment — the recipient of a then-rare cornea transplant. At 16, she made history again, because of a medical experiment she had conducted. Taylor Bernheim, a junior at Ramaz day school in Manhattan, last week was named winner of a $50,000 second prize in the annual Siemens Westinghouse science competition.

The students at the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls heard their assistant principal’s voice over the intercom system Monday morning. “I have a very important announcement to make,” Tzipora Meier said. Looking at the concerned faces of people in her office, she knew what was on their mind — the violence in Israel.

For the second year in a row, two seniors at the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls in Hewlett Bay Park, L.I., were national finalists in the prestigious Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology. But this time, it was not necessary to explain their need to make their presentation before the Sabbath and for glatt kosher food.
