BJENY-SAJES=JEWATIB (Jewish Ed Without All The Intermarriage Bashing)

Last night I went to the tribute dinner for an organization with even more of a mouthful of an acronym name than most Jewish groups: BJENY-SAJES.
The initials stand for the Board of Jewish Education of New York-Suffolk Association for Jewish Education Services.

Without my super-duper investigative reporting skills and high-placed contacts, I actually might not have known what SAJES’ initials stood for, since it’s not on the Web site or any of the official materials.

Women Rabbis? Teens Weigh In

04/27/2010

This letter is being written in support of Rabba Sara Hurwitz. We are two 13-year-old Jewish girls who heard her speak and were extremely moved by her cause (“RCA Set To Rule On Women’s Roles,” April 23).

Avi Weiss vs Avi Weiss

Avi Weiss’ main point for having a woman on his rabbinic staff at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale is that “90 percent” of what a rabba (woman rabbi) does is the same as what a rabbi does. In Avi’s shul, a rabba gives sermons from the pulpit, teaches classes, visits the sick, provides spiritual and halachic guidance, and works with bat mitzvah girls, and Sara Hurwitz does that all quite nicely. So why not give her honor equal to her colleagues who are men?

Rabbis’ Posse Closing In On Avi Weiss

The RCA doesn’t like the way Avi has been spinning things, he’s been talking too loudly and defiantly, saying that he came away with a victory – about anything. So now the word “maharat” has to go, not just “rabba.” Both the RCA and Agudah are in agreement that Hebrew Institute itself will now have to decide if it is Orthodox or not. This is no longer about Avi alone.

Kanefsky: The 10-Year Solution

Rabbi Yosef Kanefsky laid out some legitimate criticism of Rav Avi’s ordination of Sara Hurwitz, changing her title from Maharat to Rabba:

Avi Weiss - Like Butch Cassidy In Bolivia

In the end, all of Orthodoxy — RCA, YU, Agudah, YCT — was aiming its guns at Avi Weiss. To see him this past week reminded me of the end of Butch Cassidy down in Bolivia, with every policeman, every soldier, south of the Rio Grande ready to blow him away (along with his plans for women rabbis).

Amid Furor, Weiss Retreats From ‘Rabba’ Title

Deal with RCA means only one ‘rabba’ will exist; Orthodox feminists ‘saddened’ over development.

On the eve of a conference marking the expansion of leadership roles for women within Orthodoxy, the trend’s most prominent rabbinic proponent has, amid intense criticism, backtracked from his near-ordination of female rabbis.

Agudah: Avi Weiss Shul Not Orthodox

It's a strange thing about some liberal rabbis. They knock the concept of "Das Torah" (the unilateral and unquestioned right of sages to guide their community based upon their mastery of Torah). But then, when a rabbi such as Avi Weiss want to create a woman rabbi, he acts unilaterally, without respecting any communal consensus, based upon what he says is his own mastery and understanding of Torah. In other words, his Das Torah.

Orthodox Group Pushing Ethical Kosher Guidelines

In wake of Agriprocessors, RCA targets ‘wrongdoing.’

A few months after the Conservative movement unveiled a first draft of its “Magen Tzedek” standards for evaluating whether kosher food companies comply with Jewish ethical teachings, a centrist Orthodox group has issued its own “principles and ethical guidelines” for the kosher food industry.
