Countering Oil Dependency

 Regarding, “A Way Out Of Our Oil Dependency” (Editor’s column, June 25), reducing fossil fuels globally will not only help improve energy security throughout the world but also decrease greenhouse gas emissions. If every nation had its own supply of renewable energy, fossil fuel tyranny and energy scarcity would decrease. As oil is a primary source of income for Iran, it’s hard to see how reducing our need for oil detracts from our security interests.

Hoping to educate the Orthodox world about the environment and climate change is particularly apropos in a time when movements like eco-kashrut and events such as the once-in-28-years Birchat HaChamah have gained such popularity in the Jewish community.

Regina Benshimon was busy preparing for Yom Kippur last September, but she stopped as the sun set the evening before the Day of Atonement would begin to celebrate the Sabbath. After dinner with her husband and the five of her seven children who lived at home (the two eldest were already married) she went to bed early. It was to be the 44-year-old chasidic woman's last Shabbat.
