Israel’s Navy Hits Terrorists at Sea

06/07/2010

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel's Navy killed four men that it said were planning a terror attack at sea.

Early Monday morning, the Navy forces fired on Palestinians wearing diving suits off the coast of Gaza. The men were "on their way to perpetrate a terrorist attack," according to the Israel Defense Forces spokesman. No Israeli forces were hurt.

Venezuela’s Chavez Attacks Israel in Speech

06/06/2010

CARACAS, Venezuela (JTA) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called Israel a "genocidal state" during nationally broadcast comments following violent clashes aboard a Gaza-bound flotilla.

Chavez called Israel a "cursed terrorist and murderous state" amid shouts of “Long Live Palestine” during a June 1 speech, the day after Israeli Navy commandos boarded a Gaza-bound ship and nine people were killed in the ensuing violence. He also accused Israel of supporting the local opposition against his government.

The Gaza blockade: what do you do when U.S. and Israel interests aren't in sync?

Update: the New York Times asks  whether talk about Israel as a strategic liability instead of asset is gaining traction in this "Week in Review" article.  It's the New York Times, so look for some strong reactions from pro-Israel leaders in the next few days - and some qu

Israel peacefully intercepts 7th ship

06/06/2010

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel peacefully intercepted a seventh Gaza-bound ship and brought it to Ashdod port.

The Irish-owned ship named the Rachel Corrie, in memory of an American activist who was killed by an Israeli military bulldozer in Gaza in 2003, was boarded Saturday by Israeli Navy forces 22 miles off the coast of Gaza. The ship was boarded from the sea, and not by helicopters as six flotilla ships were last week, when nine activists on a Turkish-owned ship were killed during clashes with Israeli Navy commandos.

Needed: Nuance and Balance in Gaza Flotilla Debate

06/04/2010
Special to the Jewish Week

When the New Israel Fund sent an action alert to protest gender-segregated buses in Israel, we got an enthusiastic response.

When we and the human rights groups we fund were attacked in Israel, viciously and dishonestly, we asked for signatures to a petition to Prime Minister Netanyahu in support of democratic dissent, and we got a very enthusiastic response.

But the immediate reaction we got to a brief, carefully-balanced letter we sent about the...well, let's call it the disastrous incident of the Gaza flotilla... now that was a response.

ZOA Wants Inquiry Into Turkey

06/04/2010

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The Zionist Organization of America called for an investigation of Turkey's role in this week's flotilla incident.

Israeli commandoes raided an aid flotilla headed for Gaza on Monday. Nine activists aboard the main ship were killed and seven Israeli soldiers were wounded in the subsequent melee.

Obama: Use Flotilla Fallout to Push Peace

06/04/2010

NEW YORK (JTA) -- President Obama reiterated his call for an investigation into the flotilla confrontation and urged parties in the Middle East to transform the situation into a chance to advance the peace process.

In an interview with Larry King on CNN Thursday, Obama called the loss of life on the boat "unnecessary" and predicted that the Israelis would agree to an "investigation of international standards" because they recognize that the current situation "can't be good for Israel's long-term security."

An Israel Birthday Party?

This week my almost 7-year-old daughter, Ellie –— eager to keep up with her friend who is having a Greek mythology-themed birthday party —  decided she wants to have an Israel-themed birthday party.

Now I am not generally one for themed parties, mostly because of my utter lack of arts-and-crafts skills and my overall preference, as a busy mom, to eliminate unnecessarily time-consuming activities from my life.

'Write On For Israel’ Graduates A New Crop, Just In Time

Looking out at the more than 100 people gathered for the eighth graduation ceremony of The Jewish Week’s Write On For Israel on Tuesday night, I confided that I never envisioned that the advocacy-through-journalism program for high school students would last this long.

At the outset, nine years ago, I envisioned Write On as an immediate response to the intifada, which was raging in Israel. I thought that the program could and would end when the terrorism and suicide bombing stopped. But I was wrong.

Washington Post: is Israel's blockade causing a Gaza humanitarian crisis?

This week's Gaza flotilla crisis has – no surprise here – renewed debate over Israel' blockade of Gaza, which, depending on which Israeli official is talking, is meant to choke off arms to Hamas, disillusion Gazans with the terror group's iron rule or win the release of Gilad Shalit, the kidnapped Israeli soldier held by Hamas.

But this is the Middle East, so getting facts through the morass of disinformation, misinformation and propaganda isn't easy.
