Tisha B'Av Services - Westchester/Bronx
Beth El Synagogue Center of New Rochelle will mourn the destruction of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem starting with Mincha at 7:45 p.m. Maariv, which follows at 8:45 p.m., will include the chanting of Eicha, the Biblical Book of Lamentations, and the recitation of Kinot, poems of remorse for the suffering Jews have endured throughout the ages. Beth El Synagogue Center is at Northfield Road at North Avenue. Sunday, August 9 – Tisha B’Av – Services begin at 8 a.m. without tallit or tefillin. Mincha with tallit and tefillin will be at 1 p.m. Regular Mincha service will be at 7:45 p.m., followed by Maariv, which will conclude the fast and mourning. Photo Exhibit - Westchester/Bronx
July 14 to August 26 – “Panoramic Photography’’ – An exhibition of black and white panoramic photographs from around the U.S. will be displayed in the Kanner-Kurzon Museum of Beth El Synagogue Center in New Rochelle. Subjects include union workers on weekend outings, the U.S. Army from 1910 to 1930, the White House and elsewhere, from the collection of Dr. Neal Friedberg. Dr. Friedberg, a retired hematologist and oncologist, stumbled upon a panoramic photograph of Cornell University about 10 years ago, and it sparked the start of his collection. The gallery is open Saturday and Sunday mornings. To visit at other times, arrangements can be made at the Beth El office or by calling 914-235-2700, ext. 223. “Eyes Wide Open’’ – 7:30 p.m. This riveting one-hour documentary film explores the complex ways in which American Jews view Israel and Israelis. The movie follows a diverse group of American Jews visiting Israel and reveals their feelings as they grapple with their experiences in Israel. The film was produced by synagogue member Jonathan Lopatin, who will lead a panel discussion after the film. It was directed by Jerusalem-based filmmaker Paula Weiman-Kelman and written by Stuart Schoffman. Light refreshments will be served. For reservations, please call 914-235-2700, ext. 223. Mommy and Me - Westchester/Bronx
Mommy and Me with Bobbie Doowah, innovative music and movement classes for children birth, through two years of age. Moms and tots will experience Jewish music and songs in a stimulating, fun and creative environment. The Fall semester of the Mommy and Me program begins on September 15 and goes through November 27. A free trial class is available to moms and tots who are new to the program. Classes are held on Mondays from 9:45-10:45 AM. Fee: $195 for 11 weeks.
