Many Jewish journalists, myself included, spent a good deal of this past spring discussing Peter Beinart's provocative essay on liberal Zionism. If you thought that horse died, think again: Publisher's Weekly just announced that Beinart struck a deal with Times Books to expand the piece into a full length book. It should come out "late 2011."
So what'll be in the expanded book? Apparently a lot more on the slow death of democracy in Israel, which is what Beinart and many liberals see as the gravest threat to the state. Tablet magazine spoke with Beinart yesterday about the new deal, and he said this about the book's expanded focus: "I think Israel is a complicated place, but for me the framework will be to try to argue that there has been such a thing as liberal Zionism, there are liberal democratic currents in Zionist thought and Israeli institutions, but they are under siege, and we can’t defend them unless we first recognize that they’re imperiled."
Enjoy the quiet before the storm.
