Must-read story on the sharia scare: Jewish law could be next

In the “must read” category, check out Ron Kampeas' story headlined “Anti-Sharia Laws Stir Concerns that Halachah Could Be Next.”

Ron looks at the still-growing movement in states across the country to ban sharia, or Islamic law, a movement that the ADL's Abe Foxman called "camouflaged bigotry.”

Proponents of such legislation play on absurd fears of an Islamic plan to take over the legal system of the United States.

Ron writes: “If the state legislative initiatives targeting sharia are successful, they would gut a central tenet of American Jewish religious communal life: The ability under U.S. law to resolve differences according to halachah, or Jewish religious law.”

That's why both major Orthodox Jewish groups - the Orthodox Union and Agudath Israel of America -  are worried about the impact of this anti-Islam surge.

Oklahoma has already passed a referendum on the issue and similar measures are under consideration in 13 other states.

And guess what: it's not enough to argue, as some Jewish proponents of sharia scare stories do, that halachah and Christian canon law are somehow different from sharia, so banning it a matter of national self defense, not bigotry. These are the same kinds of theories about religious conspiracies to take over nations that were used against Jews for centuries – and undoubtedly will be used again if the anti-sharia surge continues.

But I don't expect Jews who support these legislative efforts to respond to logic; my guess is that they're the same folks who put out emails yesterday insisting that President Barack Obama is depressed because his “friend” Osama bin-Laden is dead.

We need one Sharia law in the U.S. , the law against usury to keep the banks and high finance in check and working for the majority of U.S. citizens. High interest rates for consumers and low or no interest for high finance and large corporations is not only wrong but immoral! Usury from the mortgage industry by proxy and reflected in false high real estate prices is just one financial element working against the average person in the present sad state of our economy.

I hate to break this to you, Jimmy, but Jews who don't respond to YOUR logic are not the wacked out extreme you would love to believe....it is your "logic" that is out of step with the world today and most thinking Jews.

As the Arab world tries to exterminate the Jews and the State of Israel, YOU can rest comfortably in the knowledge that YOU have stuck to your liberal principles and kubaya feelings that the Arabs are just misunderstood and would most likely respond to exclamations of friendship and love from us....not to mention great portions of the Land of Israel ceded over to them.

What rank hypocrisy and fear mongering. When was the last time we saw Jewish groups -other than maybe 3 on the right- ever complain when the ACLU et all work to banish Christianity from the public and political sphere.
Jewish law does not demand predominance worldwide, like Sharia. Jews are not trying to conquer the US. We are not bombing the US and waging a war of terror.
This article is a good example of the derangement of grievance politics, where minority activists so hate and fear the majority, that they work against any rational group interest. Growing Islam in America is not in our interest. If you think it is, spend some time on Malmo, Sweden, where Jews are besieged by Muslims and the left.

Perhaps efforts should be directed at differentiating Halacha from Sharia.

Sharia is real and its effect are felt all over the world, it is an intolerant doctrine that supports the murder of girls (by their own families) for the crime of being raped.

certainly our war in the land of Israel can only be won when presented in a broader context of the Jihad that threatens the whole world.
If we are blind to this - then no one will be left to stand up to the atrocities of Islam, at home and worldwide.
