A Vote FOR Ahmadinejad

I think Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a despicable and dangerous fellow.  And I hope he keeps his job as president of Iran for a long time.

He is term-limited and has to leave office next year, but I hope Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei grants him a dispensation and lets his former protege run again even though he's fallen out of favor.

Iranians are blaming Ahmadinejad for his country’s financial crisis and the collapse of the rial.  For the rest of us, he is the poster boy for everyone who wishes to see the collapse of the Islamic Republic and true regime change.

That’s why I want him to stay. I would be very sorry to see him go with all his bombast about wiping Israel off the map, Holocaust denial, anti-Semitism and obnoxious bravado.

Those are among his most valuable qualities.  They have helped Israel focus international attention on the Iranian nuclear threat, and made it possible for the United States to organize an extensive – and expanding – program of international sanctions, and he has helped unify an otherwise polarized US Congress in demanding more and tougher sanctions and pressing the administration to work harder to sell them to the rest of the world.

As long as Ahmadinejad is around, the job of keeping the international focus on Iran’s nuclear ambitions will be a lot easier and help keep some of our shaky sanctions partners on the reservation.  My great fear is that whoever succeeds Ahmadinejad might be a lot smarter and appear to be more sane and moderate and less threatening.  Especially since any change would be only stylistic, not substantive.
