(JTA) – A hearing has been scheduled to request a new trial for former Agriprocessors official Sholom Rubashkin.

Documents filed Monday indicate a new hearing is set for June 15 before the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis, The Associated Press reported.

Rubashkin, the former head of what once was the nation’s largest kosher slaughterhouse and packing plant in Postville, Iowa, was convicted of financial fraud in 2009 and sentenced to 27 years in prison.

Agriprocessors Supervisor Arrested in Israel

(JTA) -- A former supervisor of the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant in Iowa was arrested in Israel.

Hosam Amara, 46, was indicted in 2009 on federal charges of fraud and immigration abuses. He is accused of some of the worst worker abuses at the now defunct plant in Postville, according to the Des Moines Register. In 2008, the plant was the site of what at the time was the largest immigration enforcement action in American history.

Extradition proceedings against Amara will begin in Israel on May 2, according to the newspaper.

Rubashkin Loses Bid for New Trial

(JTA) -- A federal judge denied a motion for a new trial for former Agriprocessors executive Sholom Rubashkin.

U.S. District Court Chief Judge Linda Reade on Wednesday rejected a motion that accused her of a conflict of interest in Rubashkin's case. The defense for Rubashkin, a vice president with the kosher meatpacking firm in Iowa, claimed Reade should have recused herself.

A federal judge in Iowa said she plans to sentence Sholom Rubashkin, a former executive at the Agriprocessors meatpacking plant in Iowa, to 27 years in prison and to pay $31 million in restitution for bank fraud.

Judge Linda Reade, chief judge of the Northern District Court in Iowa, wrote in a 52-page sentencing memorandum that the sentence of 27 years is “sufficient, but not greater than necessary,” to comply with the law.
