Anti-Sharia Laws Stir Concerns that Halachah Could Be Next

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- With conservative lawmakers across the United States trying to outlaw sharia, or Islamic religious law, Jewish organizations are concerned that halachah could be next.

If the state legislative initiatives targeting sharia are successful, they would gut a central tenet of American Jewish religious communal life: The ability under U.S. law to resolve differences according to halachah, or Jewish religious law.

Facebook Removes Third Intifada Page

JERUSALEM (JTA) – Facebook has removed a page calling for a third Palestinian uprising against Israel, but a new one quickly took its place.

Nearly 350,000 people had registered for the "Third Palestinian Intifada" page, established on Facebook earlier this month. The page, which calls for a third Palestinian uprising to begin May 15, included quotes and film clips calling for killing Jews and Israelis, and for "liberating" Jerusalem and Palestine using violence. It also directs users to related content on Twitter, YouTube and elsewhere on the internet.

Facebook to Monitor Intifada Page, Won’t Remove It

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Facebook will monitor a page calling for a third Palestinian uprising against Israel but will not remove it.

"Third Palestinian Intifada," established on Facebook less than a month ago, calls for a third Palestinian uprising to begin May 15. The page, which as of March 27 had more than 330,000 friends, includes quotes and film clips calling for killing Jews and Israelis, and for "liberating" Jerusalem and Palestine using violence. It also directs users to related content on Twitter, YouTube and elsewhere.

(JTA) -- A Facebook page calling for a third Palestinian intifada is abusing technology to promote terrorist violence and should be taken down, the Anti-Defamation League said.

AJC criticizes "inappropriate" Knesset hearings on J Street

J Street still makes some major Jewish leaders nervous, but that doesn't mean they like the idea of Israeli politicians mucking around in the internal affairs of the a diverse American Jewish community.

Today the American Jewish Committee criticized this week's Knesset hearings into whether J Street is really the pro-Israel, pro-peace group it claims to be.

Charlie Sheen Demanding Apology From ADL

(JTA) -- Actor Charlie Sheen is demanding an apology from the Anti-Defamation League for saying that his rant against the executive producer of his hit TV sitcom was "borderline anti-Semitism."

A letter from Sheen's attorney Marty Singer demands a retraction because, it says, Sheen's only intention was to "address the man rather than his television persona," the TMZ website reported Tuesday.

(JTA) -- Actor Charlie Sheen's rant against the executive producer of his hit TV sitcom is "borderline anti-Semitism," the Anti Defamation League's Abraham Foxman said.

Sheen, in a radio interview Feb. 24 and in a letter posted on the TMZ website, called the "Two and a Half Men" executive producer Chuck Lorre a "contaminated little maggot," said he was a "clown" and "stupid," and referred to him several times as Chaim Levine.

Lorre's given name is Charles Michael Levine.

Reform Movement Accepts Beck’s Apology

NEW YORK (JTA) – The Reform Movement accepted Fox News host Glenn Beck's apology for comparing Reform Judaism to radical Islam.

"The Reform Movement sincerely hopes this apology opens a new door of understanding and cooperation between us and helps to elevate the state of our political discourse," Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie, president of the Union for Reform Judaism wrote in a letter to Beck.

Jewish Groups Call Out Rep. Cohen on Holocaust Imagery

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Jewish groups called on a Democratic congressman to apologize for using Holocaust terminology in attacking Republicans.

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), addressing the U.S. House of Representatives Tuesday night in a debate over a Republican bill to repeal last year's heath care reforms, likened Republican claims to tactics used by the Nazi propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels.

"They say it’s a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels,” he said. He also called the Republican claims a "blood libel."

The attempted assassination of a Jewish member of Congress from Arizona, Gabrielle Giffords, and the wanton killing of six others in Tucson on Saturday has revived the debate over whether Jewish communal and religious leaders are doing enough to combat a toxic political climate that many say threatens a new age of political violence.
